5th wheel hitch
Greeting's again, in my long bed dodge i'm using an RBW hitch my base rails are mounted center to center 22x29,holes in close ,it's a 15k,the s.o.b. 5th weights 10,000 dry,my new 5ver weights 12,500 dry. I'm thinking I should go to a 16,000lb hitch, I've considered a Reese ,& a16,000lb to be on the safe side. I'm not sure of brand, but if I go with same style leg but wider stance I think holes should be about 4in.wider,&should be able to pin right in existing base rails, any suggestions, better safe than totally ignorant,in which I try to keep myself from being.thank's for any ideas. I've looked for a reese hitch, found a 20.000lb. slider, a valley 16,000lb,and a Curt 20,000lb has anyone heard of a Curt hitch,it sounds like a off brand of reese, dealer says its great but there idea is to sell a product.

If you are going to upgrade the hitch why not go with a 20K hitch. Not sure the cost difference. When I bout the trailer I told them to order me a hitch. When they saw it was a 3500 (dually) the mechanic got the 20K hitch just in case.
Just a thought.
Mine is the reese 20K

John, is your 3500 a dually? If so, that's a good call on the 20K since the truck is much more capable than mine.
Don,
I have a 16K Valley(Husky?) and this is what the dealer installed on my 3/4 ton. Luckily, it does exceed the Truck's maximum 5th wheel tow rating of 15,200lb. Obviously a 15K would have been a mistake since it would not have met the rating. The gross weight rating of my trailer is a hair over 14K, and this hitch means I have 2,000 lbs of allowance or margin. Any higher hitch in my case won't help me. If I ever get a bigger trailer I'll be needing more than just a bigger hitch.
You don't mention what your TV is, but the more important number to consider is the Gross Weight Rating of the trailer, NEVER the dry weight. After you remove the trailer from the sales lot and start loading it up, it will probably never be at the dry weight again. You want the hitch to more than meet your needs of the trailer, but only if your truck can take it.

I like John Kohl's approach. I feel better with more hitch capacity. You may load up the rig over 15,000 lbs. and it would be nice not to worry about it.
You may have an opportunity to get an underbed hitch frame, if having a clean bed matters to you when the hitch is removed. I did have to re-install the hitch parts above the bed to get a smooth fit to make removal easier, but that's because of slap-dash installation, not the hitch itself. I like our Pull-Rite and their customer service at the 2009 Fall rally was excellent.

Don57- I have a F350 DRW and my Monty is rated at 14,250 total weight. So when I looked for hitches I found and bought a 16K Curt E5. And like it alot! The truck shop where I have my work done carries alot of brands. They showed and recommended I try the Curt. I couldn't see spending upwards and over in some cases of $1000. To me I felt like I was paying for a name on some of them. Curt is a well built unit with a lot of great features IMO and at a better price. I paid $475 out the door installed. I was looking into their 20K Q5 ($725 installed), but I figured if I am towing that much I will will be over weight for my truck.
ps I threw the prices I paid in so you could have something to compare to.I know how it is to buy something thinking you got a good deal till you find out you didn't.

Pulling a 3400 I would go with the Curt Q5 20K. I don't think you will be dissappointed.
