Cordless Impact

For those that carry them what brand and model cordless impact wrench/driver do you use for tire changes?

Harbor Freight is the one I have. It works as good as the Snapon. We used both side by side putting the deck on a bridge and cost about half as much.

So it looks like you don't have to spend $700 on the highend impact drivers for enough torque to hanbdle lug nuts. That is awesome. Anyone using the IR 20V W7152? Appears to be right in the middle on the price scale.

I have a 20 volt Dewalt 1\2" drive. But I use it for more then just changing tires. I have a hole set of 20 & now 60 volt Dewalt tools.

I still do it the manual way. lol.
But speaking of impact guns, It really bugs me when at 6- 7am someone retracts there stabilizer jacks upon leaving the campground using an impact gun. DONT THESE PEOPLE REALIZE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE TRYING TO SLEEP.
Besides the fact that they are slowly destroying there jacks.

Yeah, you don’t need (or really want) an impact for the rear stabilizers. A cordless drill works great.

My bro-inlaw just did this very thing. He stripped his rear jacks using a 1/2" impact on their Cougar 5th wheel.

I'm usually not one to recommend anything from Harbor Freight but their Earthquake brand impacts are good tools. Not the Bauer brand. They are junk as expected, but the Earthquake with 20 Volt Lithium is a good tool. They were recommended to me by several mechanics at a trucking company where they use them every single day.

The HF Earthquake XT 1/2" does a good job on the trailer lugs and I keep it in the truck to use on tractor tires on the farm. On sale at HF for $229 in today's mail out. Just as a side note. A couple of months ago, I was on the way to the farm and when crossing an intersection, I noticed a Montana pulled off on the side of the road. I turned around to see if I could help and found an older gentleman struggling with a 1/2" pull handle. He had managed to get the trailer jacked up and the spare out. You can only imagine his joy when I brought out my impact wrench and had his tire changed in about 5 minutes.

You don't need a high dollar impact as you can use a breakover bar to loosen the lug nuts and then jack it up and use your middle of the road impact. Same with going back on ... just use the impact to snug them up ... finish it off with a torque wrench. Don't reef on a lug nut with an impact to get it tight ... you're just asking for trouble. My portable impact gun is a Craftsman.

It look like you have a lot of choices. Any of them will do what you wont to do. Choose the cheapest or the one most convenient to buy.

I use a breaker bar and a socket. It never needs charging, takes up less space,You always have to torque the wheels so I carry one of those. How many times will you be changing a tire anyway?

Now there you go looking on the practical side. We might be related.

I use an 18 volt Makita impact wrench to start the lug nuts and take them up to about 50 ft-lb (it's upper limit). From there, I use a torque wrench.
