Onan QG 5500 LP Oil change in Montana -how easy?

So was just thinking about my first oil change in my 2021 Montana onan generator, the dealer said 25 hours for first oil change. I haven't used the new fiver yet but have ran the Onan some in storage to charge batteries and do some projects inside it as I prep for our first outing post winter here. Has anyone changed the oil in these themselves? My dealer said they typically farm this out, to like the local cummins dealer, which I found fairly ridiculous. I haven't looked into it yet but just curious if people have done this themselves. I looked at old thread and nothing recent on this. I heard the filter is at the bottom of it, not sure if there is a spot in underbelly to pull it out? Haven't even looked. Just looking for some tips! Also looking at youtube now.

Do a Google search for How to change oil in a 5500 Onan generator.
It takes you right through it. Looks to be easy no problem.

No reason to pay someone to perform this maintenance if you are able bodied.

did a little youtube watching and seems really easy. Another question, is anyone using 15w/40 sythetic as opposed to the recommened cummins onan oil seen here?

I don’t have a 5500 Onan but I do have a 4000 Onan and I do use synthetic oil in it. I use synthetic I every IC engine I own including my lawnmower.

I've been using the 15w/40 syn in mine. It's a 2005 model and in my 3790 now. You do have to keep an eye on the level as it's only a 2 quart system.

It drains slow and refilling takes a while. This page is from the service manual from the earlier model I have. The newer models are probably similar.

My advice is make sure you have the a filter socket and extension as mine is a ways up there. Otherwise simple!

Agree on the wrench.

Another dumb question. Isn’t 15w/40 in general a diesel oil. Was just wondering why a diesel oil is recommended by Cummins for an LP gas generator? Maybe I just dont know what I'm talking about, lol. Educate me.

I don’t think they are recommending diesel oil just 15 W 40.

The service manual advises different oil viscosity for different temp ranges, I just use the recommended 30 weight in our LPG 5500.

Look up rvgeeks on youtube they have a class A but have great videos on maintenance, one being an excellent step by step on oil change and fuel filter change. Fuel filter may not be applicable due to running off LPG. Still a GREAT resource.

I would watch RV Street (Martin) on YouTube. He just did a 3 part series on generator maintenance:

I had a friend who made his living repairing generators mostly Onan. He said the 5500 Onan at about 1900 hours, or I think it was 1900 hours would break the belt that hooked the engine to the generator. They have a what he called a vertical lawn mower engine. I’m not sure whether it is an actual lawn mower engine or just a vertical engine. When the belt breaks it is a major repair. The belt is like a timing belt on a car and the generator must be dissembled to change it. So if at about 1900 hours it quits this could be the the belt.
