Struts for Bed/Mattress

We replaced the 20 lb mattress that came with the RV with a Foam mattress that weighs in at 54 lbs. As expected, the new load overloads the factory lift struts so accessing the under-bed storage space is a real chore and a strain for both me and my wife.
A friend uses a 1' X 1' piece of lumber to prop it open but that seems dangerous and I would still need to lift the weight to placed the prop.
What are your suggestions/experience. Any parts and a source would be greatly appreciated.
