Disc brakes and suspension

Consider not installing airbags. Airbags can fail and then cause you some more serious problems. Check out this web link for an alternative I have had very good success with and no maintenance.

6500 ish for 7K axles but you don't really have axles. That's with disc brake upgrade.

The only place to get it done on the west coast is Henderson’s Alignment shop in Grants Pass,OR. Had mine done there last November. Excellent work, great guys to work with. A little more expensive than the factory because you pay freight from Elkhart. But on the other hand you don’t have to drive half way across the country.

So you had the disc brakes and the IS from MORryde installed? What was the cost (if you don't mind me asking)?

So far we likely. The trailer seems to ride smoother. The cost was around $9000. I did get their winter pricing.

I had the hydraulic disc brakes installed and chose the IS. It is my feeling when you add disc brakes you add 40% more torque (breaking power). I do not feel the factory installed suspension was designed to handle that much more torque. The IS install added about 800 pounds of steel to the RV in suspension frame work.

Your note an interesting point. I am spec'ing the disc brakes for our HC 353. Looking at E-trailer Kodak's. But I have wondered about the increased torque on the suspension. I am not looking for heavier braking so much as a more reliable system for running west. Is your 40% a figure you have seen quoted or your best guess (not that I am disputing the number as I pretty much agree!)

Has anyone seen or been told that the increased torque from disk brakes could be a problem with the stock suspension?

Just wondering? Would rather be safe then stuck along the side of the road with a broken spring.

Braking isn't what breaks the springs.

We bought a used 2013 Montana 3700RL last year. The original owner had IS & Disc Brakes installed within first year of ordering the unit. They went to Alaska and with several trips later from PA to WY. He loved the improvement from original axles and brakes. I can't be believe the difference with the smooth ride and stopping. I highly recommend both.

With the difference in price from west coast to Elkhart In. i think i would drive to the factory for the brakes and I.S. Make a vacation out of it and it doesn't seem so expensive. The brakes and I.S. is the best improvement you can do to your rv.

I agree with Cruiser, the brakes have little effect on the suspension. The regular suspension requires periodic maintenance (lube and checking for wear). One of my wet bolts came from the factory dry and by the time I checked it the bushing was gone. Heaven forbid that Keystone would have seen the problem and fix it (the bolt would not take grease) but that seems to be par for the course. The disc brakes are wonderful.

My trailer (2011 3580RL) has the MORryde LRE 4000 rubber equalizers from the factory and does a decent job of helping the ride. Yes, I realize the IS would definitely be better.
I'm strongly considering adding a set of shock absorbers to help with the ride quality and just doing the disk brakes.
By far the biggest improvement will be the brake upgrade IMO, the IS suspension would be nice, but for me not something I want to spend the money on.
Probably gonna add the X factory chassis braces too...

Starman....if you have the money do the IS system. In my situation I was tried of spring hangers breaking, springs breaking, wet/dry bolts breaking. If you aren't having axle issues I would not get the IS system.


Note: about the smoothness or suspension, I don't think it is much different.

Twopetes. if you are only after a 'reliable braking system' your reualar trailer brakes won't fail you, they'll do fine.

but if you want better stopping force, get disc brakes. If you want really good realiable suspension system get the IS system.

It is said that the IS gives a much smoother ride. How would one know that unless they rode in the trailer before and after the installation?
