Kiptopeke State Park
Well the snow is deep here and will be for a long time and I was reading this group and thinking of our last trip......
We stayed at Kiptopeke State Park on the way back from the Outer Banks. Kiptopeke is located at Cape Charles VA just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. It's also about five miles south of Cherrystone which I know a lot of you are familiar with.
Kiptopeke is a wonderful campground (at least in early October when we were there) large easy access sites with water, electricity, sewer and cable, reasonable prices and a beautiful location. The sites are shaded by very tall pines and there is a beautiful beach on the bay with a unique breakwater composed of 9 concrete liberty ships what were arranged and sunk to form a breakwater for the ferry terminal. The ferry was stopped when the bridge and tunnel were completed but the concrete ships remain and make for interesting photos. Of the seven campgrounds we stayed at on that trip this is the one I think of most fondly. I look forward to staying there again this coming fall.
