Selling RV, Delivery before sale is complete?

SO I am selling our Montana, and I have been talking to a couple for the last few days. They want the RV , and we agreed on a price. They asked if I would be willing to deliver it, which I agreed to do for a fee, HOWEVER, they wanted me to deliver it simply on a refundable deposit, that was actually less then 10%. Long story short, I said no. I offered to deliver it on a fully executed sale, or at the least, a $5000 non refundable deposit. I stated all the risk was on me. If it got wrecked during the trip, that was on me. They obviously would not buy it at that point, and would request their refundable deposit back. So we went back and forth, and now, the husband needs another day to think it over. He doesn't want to shell out a large, refundable or non refundable deposit for this deal. Am I going crazy? They only live 4 hours away. They don't want to see it in person, and are requesting that I basically drive it to them for inspection, so they can decide, instead of the other way around. So has the RV buying process changed in the last 20 years and I don't know about it? Thoughts everyone? am I being unreasonable?

I would say if they were really interested they would take the drive to see it. Sort of looks like they want to see it, but want you to put yourself out for it. You say 4 hours so approx 200 miles then, at 10 MPG for 400 mile/40 Gals fuel, figure the cost and have them send you a check or put money in a PayPal account and you'll be glad to drive it to them.
That's the way I would handle it, or else tell them to find another sucker.

No dough, no go! But seriously, if they won't give you some good faith money now, what's to say they aren't complete time wasters. It's a sellers market. Time to move on.

I thought so. They wanted to do a 2200 refundable deposit, and were willing to pay for diesel and such, but my deal was what happens if someone crashes into the unit on the way out there? At that point, they wont buy it, I refund their deposit, and then have to take it off the market to get it repaired, all at my expense. That's a lot of risk. I offered to deliver it to them after the deal was executed for time and diesel, and I also offered to do it for a 5000 non refundable deposit. I thought both of those options were more than reasonable.

They are wasting your TIME and are not serious buyers ,If they are not willing to even look at it their done in my book . This is a sellers market right now and for the foreseeable future if its priced right it will go in no time . Lazy days in Florida sells 500 units a month now and can,t get units in fast enough. Hold your line .

I agree. They messaged me this morning and now what to set a time to come look at it. Im not worried, right now the unit is in upstate NY, we are heading there Thursday. If we don't sell it, we will be bringing it back down here to sunny Florida in July, where I am sure it will go faster.

Those "buyers" are flaky. I would agree to meet them at your convenience to see the rig. Once. After that for them it would be cash or leave me alone and the trailer is for sale to anybody at that point. I would expect more BS from them but would not pause for any of it. Good luck.

I would waste no more time on these people. Man who bought mine drove that distance 3 times and was happy to do so because I had what he wanted and we came to price agreement.

OMG........forget that deal. If they really want it they would make the drive.....Sounds like they are being lazy and putting it all on you....There are other, more willing buyers out there.

Tell them to pay for a certified RV inspector to come look at it if they don't want to drive to see it.
If they don't want to make the effort then they don't want it that bad.

I can understand the refundable deposit..First, if you have an accident you have insurance... 2nd, I have driven many places to look at old cars. Some would tell the me the car is perfect to only be surprised after driving 3 hours the car was junk... Now, If your RV is Perfect or near with all the issues being dislosed you should not worry. I would tell them Ill drive there to show you the RV..I want a 1000.00 non refundable deposit. If you don't buy it this is for my time and fuel. If you do buy it the 1000 will be discounted off the price... As Long as You are honest and dont tell them if you a like new Rv that has issues.... you will be fine..If you try to pawn off a Like new unit that is is Good Condition or a Good Condition Rv that is in poor condition you can understand the buyers side... Good Luck on the sale..I hope these folks are not planning to RV all over the Country, it sounds like they hate driving..

I would be wary of this deal. Good advice from others. Ours was on market 3 weeks, then got a call from folks in Florida wanting to come pick it up unseen in 3 days. They flew the 600+ miles, rented a car and brought cashiers checks for full amount for the full rig (TV & 5r). Hang in. It's a sellers market. After 3.5 years of use, we took only a $4k hit on RV and a $10k loss on the $80k (msrp) dually Ram. Hope you have patience.

Yeah all good advice. They are still going back and forth with me, I have already wrote it off. I told them to come look at it, they don't need to give me anything at all, just come look. They want me to drive it to them, or hold it. I offered to hold it for them until the weekend after memorial day for a $3000 ( less than 10%) fully refundable deposit. Then they could drive and look at it, and buy it for the remaining balance, or drive away with there $3000 back. Today they sent me a text and said they were uncomfortable giving a refundable deposit of that amount, and that a local dealers hold them for $500 LOL I didn't have the heart to explain to them that the dealer will take $500 if they purchased it, and needed time to finalize the paperwork. But yeah, if they don't want to drive that short of distance, I have given up. Bottom line, they can come anytime they want and see it for nothing, zip, zero ...crazy...anyways...still for sale..

I would back away! If they are back and forth just to come look what’s it going to be like to close the deal. I drove several hours to look at something I wanted!

Don't be drawn in by people like this. I had a potential buyer want to look at my RV but wanted me to bring it to him. Then he took one minute to walk in and out of the rig then saying he did not want it - it was too expensive. He must have thought I'd cave to his ridiculous offer since I drove it across town (20 miles). I told him no and we parted on unfriendly terms. Not a nice guy in person.

They are already negotiating - if you drop your deposit amount, we will come see it, if not we can go to a dealer. If you drop the deposit amount, be prepared for lots more negotiation. The final step will be: "tow to our site, and we will get you a cashier's check for the balance. Oops, we don't like it as much as we thought - maybe drop the price another $ 10k, we might like it better. "
I would stop talking to them; tell them someone with cash in hand is seeing it Thursday.

I've sold Real Estate for almost 40 years - the latest trend is to agree on a price and then go look at it. All you are doing is taking your product off the market hoping that they will buy - As far as taking it to them for them to inspect is just not recommented - it's a seller's market now - let them come to you, don't hold without a deposit - I would ask for at least 10% - give them no more that 2 weeks to have a loan commitment. The buyer will probably ask for and it would not be unreasonable to make the deal contingent upon professional inspection.
