Compartment cam locks

One of the options you can get with the Tubular Locks is a dust cover. It seems to work well. I put the dust cover on any locks that get direct dirt and grim from the road.

I replaced all my compartment locks 5+ years ago. I went with the tubular key locks. I bought them from Padlocks 4 less. I just went to their website and they now have a lot more options on cabinet locks then when I bought mine.

I generally buy the cam locks here, changing the dratted CH751's to something else. Our 5er spends much of the summer at a virtually deserted during the week CG that has ease of access from a seldom traveled town road: https://www.mcmaster.com/locks/cam-locks-and-latches/.


On the last 5er I used the tubular keyed version but they started getting very sticky after a year or so. I use a common though keyed alike style this time. Yes, I prefer keeping compartments locked - my choice and hope a thief decides the neighbor's trailer is easier pickings if his CH751 wont work. As far as the side slam locks - can't easily change them, only the front storage area complete with my $700 disc brake actuator, $150 NAPA Gold battery and a $5 bottle of truck oil.

After being a locksmith for 35 plus years I can assure you that you can get replacements keyed to a different key. I am retired now but I personally have changed out MANY for some of my customers. I’m not sure but I believe national makes a 1” cam lock and as for dust you can get spring covers or locks with a built in dust cover. You can also get thin spacers and offset tail pieces. If you go with a tubular key lock BE SURE you use dust covers.

I always use Vaseline to cover outside locks, a light coating over the outside key opening and I aalso pull tumblers out and coat them. It has worked for as long as I've been doing that. Kind of like applying dielectric grease on all outdoor wiring connections. It has worked for me but, your out come may very.

Very easy to break into but guess what I still lock the doors and make sure the windows are latched. I am not trying to keep out the real thief’s, I am just trying to keep out the opportunist thief’s. They are the same ones that don’t break into your locked car but will steal everything from an unlocked car.

That is so true. Years ago I was working a night shift. When we all left work we found most of the cars in the parking lot had a broken window. Only two of us did not because we left the car unlocked. No one had anything stolen, just broken windows. The police figured someone looking for a fire arm.
