weird tow/haul glitch?

On the drive today, I was using tow/haul like I always do, and rpms went to almost 3000 and stayed there even after the downgrade leveled out. Turned it off and rpms went bit higher, then dropped down to the normal 1700. Did not re-engage tow/haul again. Will try again when I tow again in three days. Anyone seen this on their ford? John

Never seem that. I have never seen 3000 RPS after I got up to speed. Was your transmission slipping or was it in a lower gear?

Could even be a on board computer malfunction. Check it with a reader that can display error codes. Keep us posted as to what you find.

I have seen over 3,000 going down a steep grade and the tow/haul engine braking on and transmission downshifting a number of times. Once the grade levels out and I touch the throttle it shifts back to a higher gear and the rpms fall back to normal. Since it does it consistently on steep downgrades I assume that is normal.

we have a gas version with that. On one of our down hill runs it does the same thing. It seems that braking at the same time screws something up in the program. It stayed around 3000 rpm at bottom of hill, seemed to hang there and then finally dumped out. But as i said, it was fine till I started braking slightly at the same time,I don't know if you were braking, with your diesel you should not have to on most occasions, but I am not sure

My Chevy has seen 3000 on steep downgrades and sometimes after accelerating it still takes time to upshift and reduce RPM.

Did you run a Health report? It should indicate the malfunction!

How do you run a "Health Report"?

Did RPMs remain at 3000 even as you accelerated?
I think that the tow haul program will stay in the downshift/low gear/braking mode until signaled to upshift by acceleration.
Newer trucks with hill decent feature (when turned on) will start to downshift and decelerate when speed increases while descending a grade.
Tow/haul program downshifts and upshifts at higher RPMs when turned on, but downshifting starts when slowing (brakes applied momentarily) and upshifts later (higher rpm) when accelerating.

The program does not know what the driver wants. Acceleration causes upshifts.
Slowing causes downshifts. when descending a grade, some braking is required to start the downshift.

I may have this all wrong, but it is my recollection of a description given at a Super Duty owners workshop at my local dealer.

I was also running in cruise control at the time and truck did accelerate at next slight incline. Things overwise normal. I am used to it downshifting to attempt to hold speed during descent, then seeing return to 1700 rpm with upshift. Didn't see anthing on info center for health report on this 2012 f350. I am assuming it to be a glitch until it does it again. Maybe ford dealer can see a code when I get oil changed after towing to williams, az. No signs of slipping or any kind of issue prior to this. Thought I also pressed accel more at bottom of descent. Old brain...who knows. Did move info center to show tranny and oil temps after this and highest oil temp in tow was 239, tranny highest was 210...level towing was mostly 210/196 for oil/tranny. John
