Totally fed up with Murphy and his law!

Yes, I've a '06 Ford 6.0 turbo, but that engine has been perfect since I had it's coolant system power flushed and put a filter on it. Guess what - two weeks ago the AC started acting up. We're leaving on the 28th of this month on a 6k mile trip to Northern CA (8-9 weeks). Took the truck to my favorite garage on a Sunday. Two mechanics and the owner came down sick on Monday. Truck sat until following week. They found one battery had cracked just below a post, and the electric vacuum pump wasn't working (~$200 each). Told them to replace the second battery as well (another $200) since the remaining one was 3+ years old. They installed a new vacuum pump, but it wouldn't turn on when it should. Had to take the WHOLE dashboard out to get to a dumb vacuum controller solenoid thingie (another $200 part), but had to get it from Ford as no one had another anywhere near us.

At this point I was thinking I wouldn't be able to get the truck back for less that $2k. Turned out I was way too pessimistic, but STILL, why do these sort of things happen just before a planned big trip? Don't have anything like this with weekend junkets. Not even with week long ones.

Walt, a ten year old truck knows when you are planning something. I would lie to it and say you are thinking of replacing it... John

Don't feel bad. Trip planned to Co for the summer. Took '12 Ram (16K miles)to shop (dealership) for a recall and oil change. Get it back. Park for 2 weeks and notice power steering fluid dripping off under truck. Never a problem before.

Of course the dealership says they did nothing. Drove truck to Co and no problems. We'll see. Power steering runs both steering and brakes.

Some are guessing a check valve stuck???

Jim

But it's really young at heart! Still hasn't hit 50k miles!

Better to find these problems a few weeks BEFORE a trip than DURING a trip!!!
I was sweating it out on my black tank while in Canada a couple of weeks ago. Dropped underbelly and power washed the crap out and put it together again. I think the leak is on top front, so if anything is in the tank and you bounce around or park on steep downhill it was sloshing out a bit. So dumped every night on the way home and going in to dealer today. I was worried about getting home with no black tank, so color me happy I made it!

Didn't you hear? Murphy is an optimist. Twindman said it best "Better to find these problems a few weeks BEFORE a trip than DURING a trip!!!"

Stay lucky my friend, then go have a Dos Equis.

Talk about Murphy being an optimist! Got the truck back, but then my lawnmower crapped out. Since we've a one acre lot, I need this thing to work for the kid that's going to mow while we're gone. At least I was able to fix it for $90 in parts. Then I had an 'issue' with Express Scripts (I'm retired AF, so that's my drug plan). I asked for an early refill as we'd be on the road when it would normally come and they told me that particular one was back-ordered with no delivery date. Get a new prescription and fill it commercially, they said. OK, so I did on Friday and then they turned down paying anything on it - too early! Since I haven't paid hardly anything for prescription meds in a long time, I just took care of it.

Then this morning, I walked out to change the oil in the truck (we're leaving on Tuesday AM). Lo and behold, the driver's side front tire is flat! Filled it back up, oil change went without a problems (other than my dribbles on the driveway), checked pressure two hours later and it's still at 80. At least the place I got the tires for it are open tomorrow, so I can get it fixed. Haven't got to pulling the slides in and checking the Monty's tires yet. Maybe I should do that now . . .

Walt, if your like me and getting under there can be an issue and you want to check before you put the slides in, do what I do. I take my TST and plug it into the 12v plug-in in the basement. Come back in about 15 minutes and I'll know if I'm going to need to adjust anything.
