I've driven gas cars and trucks in the mountains a lot. They are so pitiful when you downshift to try to keep your speed and all that happens is the engine starts screaming and getting hot.

I was amazed how strong my diesel was at higher altitudes. I used to pass cars easily while going up long grades towing my old HI-LO camper. They would pass me back on the way down though
