I agree with this statement. The tire is the weaker of the two. I suspect that if you spin the wheel on a balancer, you will find it slightly flat on one side. Over the life of the wheel consider how many impacts that it has endured from potholes and such. A single impact mark may not be evident. The tires are a low profile design for a truck (65). In their design, low profile tires place a significantly higher stress on the wheel. There is a shorter sidewall and less cushion at an impact. Myself, I wouldn't try to read any more into it that it actually is-a split wheel that was caught before it had a chance to cause both misery and damage to the truck. Your neighbor is indeed fortunate.
After clicking your link to Monarch Pass, I wonder how much his tire pressure had increased at that elevation after likely being inflated to maximum capacity when cold?
