Changed underside fuel filter what a mess...

Wow....we just purchased an 08 f350 6.4 powerstroke. Followed the owners manual and ford sight was identical....top filter changed like clock work....but the bottom filter under driver seat....lucky I had a bucket and a quick wife to change out the diesel fuel. It was supposed to stop after the sump was drained...it kept coming and coming and coming. Changed out the old and put the new in ASAP. Does anybody know why it kept draining out when the manual said it would stop? Thanks for the help and explanation. Learning, Dino

Yes they are a fun filter to change especially finding a path to get the old out and the new back to its position; a lot of frame bracing, cables and lines in the way. Ours ran and then stopped to a drip with the drain valve, actually a lot of liquid in that filter area so you cannot be in a hurry.

I have been told that loosening the fuel filler cap helps.

Yes, loosening the filler cap may have helped. When you fuel your vehicle and replace the cap you create a pressure chamber. This could be a negative (-) OR positive (+) pressure chamber. I.E., fill your tank in winter and the cold temps will cause the fuel to contract a little, creating a negative pressure chamber. In the warmer temps of summer the fuel will expand some and create a positive pressure chamber. These pressures are not that high and the fuel cap is designed to handle some of this pressure. But, there is still some pressure in there. With that in mind, with only one or two (+)PSI, and you open the fuel line, the pressure will push fuel out at an amazing rate. I'm not sure but I suspect that this may have been your issue.

Ford has a new fuel filter part no. FD-4617 it has a O ring the old filter did not have. It helps keep water out of the high pressure fuel pump. If water gets to this pump it can be $9000+ repair bill
that Ford will not pay for. This is a problem with these trucks.
Just a little word to the wise.

When I change mine I always run it till it has less than a quarter of a tank of fuel and front end up hill. I read somewhere if you have less fuel there is less pressure. I agree it is very hard under the truck especially with 4 wheel drive shaft in the way. I usually delay reccomended changes because of this to once a year or 20K miles.

Not sure on the 08 and newer trucks... on our trucks (a pair of 2006's)

(1) Remove water drain plug (under truck filter) first. Relieves all pressure in the line.
(2) Remove secondary filter under hood. A bit more fuel may leak out of the primary drain plug under truck.
(3) Remove and replace primary filter under truck.
(4) Install new secondary filter under hood.
(5) Turn cycle ignition a few times to get fuel flowing and air out of lines (a bit more fuel drains out of plug)
(6) Re-install drain plug under truck.
(7) Another cycle or two of the ignition. Start and run for a few minutes.

A little fuel is lost during the operation but not much (less than a quart).

Steps 5-7 similar process used when truck runs out of fuel... I have an employee who has tough me twice how to complete this process with little mess

The less fuel in the tank the less fuel leaks out. I have learned the hard way.

Sounds like you were watching me yesterday. What a mess! I'm sure a half gallon or more spilled on the driveway.
I'll try lowering the level and opening the fuel cap next time.
