Extended warranties are a personal thing. For everyone who never needs one there are several who have had it pay off for them. No one can say whether or not you should have one. Every extended warranty we've ever had on any product has paid off. One particular item is one of our laptop computers. The hinge broke and the entire lid with new screen was replaced, not once, but twice. The cost of the lid with all its electronics retails at $700. The total cost for the warranty for three years was $300. Each person makes there own choice. There is no right or wrong.

When I asked the service guy about upgrading our ESP to have a "no deductible," he pointed out a Super Duty truck ready for pick up by its owner...it had just had some warrantee work done to the tune of $21,000...so, I am definitely happy to have an ESP on my truck

A year ago, I had the batteries changed in my F350 6.0L diesel at a garage that I have used for 25 years. The owner will always ask--how long are you going to keep this car/truck before they do any repairs. I trust the guy alot. He said that he used to run the Ford diesel--6.0L but had so many problems he switched. Now I know he ran the trucks alot for a business. He said an extended warranty on a 6.0L was mandatory--I have until December 30 and will buy one just before that. I have already had the supercharger replaced and recently an oil leak. Only 57K on a 4+ year old truck but the ESP plan is cheaper than a new $60K truck--I like them loaded like my King Ranch!

On my 2008 I have 100,000 mile warntee on the engine? I thought they dropped that and I had only 3/36,000. The 6.4 is the thing I worry about most if something went bad, trans & other stuf shouldn't be but about $2500 to fix, am I wrong?

You might want to go to your local Fored dealer and ask how much a transmittion replacement would cost. Yes the diesel is 5 years 100K miles and the drive train is 5 years 60K miles.

Ford installed a rebuilt transmission in our truck in May 2006 at a cost o$2500 plus /minus a couple bucks.

Yup, that and then some. It's not totally liquid though - I would have to sell some stocks.
I realize not everyone has that willpower, but if you do, you'll be a lot better off.

Oh..well that is a different story.. we have way more than 60K equity in our S&B home. We could do a home equity loan to fix the truck.....not...

I needed a transmission at 69000 miles and had bought an extended warranty but the insurance co that backed the one I bought filed bankruptcy so I had to pay $3500 for the transmission after paying $1700 for the warranty. It was 7 yr 1000,000,
I only buy Ford or GM warranty from the dealer now, I figure they will be around.

Normally Tom I would agree with you. I don't buy extended warranties on major (or minor) purchases. And had I bought a Dodge or Chevy, I probably wouldn't have one now. But I bought a 2004 6.0L Ford which suffered a turbo failure, the cam tried to swap ends, and finally it melted two pistons. Ford replaced it with a brand new 2008 6.4L truck, another first year adventure, and I have little confidence that all the problems with it have been discovered yet. So I hedged my bet and sprung for the ESP.
