Hitch Maintenance?

I haven't seen anything lately about hitch maintenace.
I read in Trailer Life about a man who's hitch froze up and he lost his trailer. The manufacturer blamed his lack of maintenance and lubrication on the failure.

How about some hints on what to look for and watch.

It was a slider hitch, sounds like the rails did not get lubed.

I have on my checklist to lube the hitch weekly when traveling and monthly when sitting still. I just do a visual inspection and move the moving parts.
