Axle Lubrication

I thought I was supposed to lub axles annually, even though the wheel bearing would be packed periodically, but less often. How do the axels get lubed. Can grease be pumped into the wheel or must bearing always be repacted?

There are pros and cons about repacking the wheel bearings. I believe in repacking them annually, but then we are on the road year round. Others repack the bearings on what they feel is "as needed." The wheel bearings is the only thing on the axles that get greased.

When Dave and I put the wet bolts on we pulled and checked the brakes and bearings. We did not repack them. However we did add grease around the nut and outside bearing to get more grease in there.
There are many posts about not using the zirt fitting because too much pressure on it will force grease out the rear seal and onto the brakes.

Good luck and safe towing.

If you have the knowledge and tools to repack them yearly, it sure is cheap insurance. However, to do the job fully, you should wash them in solvent(mineral spirits would be good), inspect them for pits and scoring, and then repack. All this depends on usage, but after doing this once, you should be able to gauge the need to repeat....whenever. JMHO, Jim
