We pull a 3100RL, first with a 2500 CTD and now a 3500 dually CTD. We never had a white knuckle minute with the old truck but the new one is so much more stable and of course, more powerful; would never go back to a SRW unless we go to a much smaller rig. With us, two big dogs and six months worth of stuff we gather on the road, we weigh right at 24,000#. While the old truck (2001) never struggled, I know we were over weight in some areas, which is one reason we moved up to the 3500. The other is that we may trade for a bigger rig sometime. We tend to keep vehicles for a long time; before we got the 3500, newest was a 2004 Pilot. We don't have a garage at home and don't mind parking out in the boonies at the mall, so the problems of parking a dually in congested areas don't bother us. We have spent a lot of time in the East; from Northern Florida to New England; have had to fold mirrors to get thru some spaces but have never regretted having the bigger truck. I understand others may not agree.

I went from a F350 SRW to a F350 DRW after I went to the scales. Needed bigger hips to carry the the load and not worry about the legal or safety aspects of being overweight.

And I am still talking about trucks!!

Pin weight. Pin weight. Pin weight is part of Carry capacity as the pin weight is carried in the bed of the truck. The dually increases the pin weight. If you do the numbers and your pin eight is within specs you are good.Example the GVWR of our 08 F-350 Dually is 13K.We ordered in to that spec. The Carry capacity is listed as 4268 however the actual weight of the truck ready to pull ourt 13 3402 is 9215Lbs gvwr less actual truck weight is 3785 which is the actual carry capacity left. The pin weight last time we weighed was 3150lbs leaving 635 lbs left over. If the GVWR of the truck was 11500 lbs which many are our actual Carry capacity would be 2289 leaving us out of spec for our pin weight,Do your numbers and check the results. At least you will know.

Ok here I go:
I have heard of hundreds of folks that went from SRW to DRW and are very happy with their choice. I can count the folks I have heard of that tow and went the other way (DRW to SRW) on one hand!

Well James, get your other hand out and count me on it! I went from a long bed F350 to my current short bed F250, and have absolutely no regrets. Now my 3100rl is maxing out my truck, and if I was buying another truck it would be a SRW F350. I don't feel any less stable in my SRW than I did in my dually and don't miss the wide hips at all. Don't miss buying 6 tires or not being able to use drive through's or car wash's either.

If it works for that's great.

I've had the srw ram 2500 and now the 3500 drw. I couldn't tell the difference in stability in the srw and drw. I did have a lighter 5th wheel with the srw by about 2.000 pounds. With the srw you have much more weight on the tire so as to hold it on the road probably almost as good as the drw.My only purpose of the drw is my rig has gcw of 26,200 pounds which is way to much for any srw whether srw 2500 or srw 3500.My pin weight now is 3480 pounds not including the nearly 300 pounds of hennsley air bag hitch. If you don't know then weigh.

I have not kept up with the newer trucks but if a SWD one ton long bed Crew cab fell with in the specs, particularly pin weight that is what we would buy. We have the dually because at that time we needed it to stay withing specs.

Maybe, but it is an option just like your Lariat pkg. A choice. Nobody is forcing RAM buyers to get the rear air suspension pkg just like Ford did not compel you to get the Lariat...

I have a DRW F-350 on order with the 14,000 lb package. Did I really want the dually? Not really but I expect to be towing a lot more often and we could upgrade our unit. If the big three would listen to their customers a bit better they would offer a one ton SRW truck with a rearend more in line with the DRW and then put 19.5" wheels and tires on it. Then the GVWR could increase substantially and we could have the ability to tow heavier units legally and safely. Remember what tires our Montana's used to come with. Better tires and bigger rearend and maybe a better choice for a lot of the consumers.

After driving a truck for most of my life (I know another truckers story) I feel safer in a DRW because of a blown tire on the rear would be extremely dangerous. Just the insurance of that other tire is giving me a peace of mind. Saw many wrecks where the extra tire would have saved lives and less injuries. JMO.

I'm a little curious...what do you mean your rig has a "gcw" of 26,200lbs ?
Also, which Montana weighs more than 26,000lbs ?
Additionally, with your stated weight, shouldn't your pin weight be between 3,930lbs to 6,550lbs ?

And no one is being forced to Rv I guess. He asked a question. As far as us, our 04 Ram 3500dually was on the helper springs with the new 5th wheel. The 17 automatically raises the rear when a heavy load is loaded. It’s all what one needs. If a trucks headlights are blinding others because the rear is squatting, then it’s not a bad idea to have bags. If the rear is left lowriding, I’d get airbags, . But as you say it’s a choice. If you want to pull a 40 foot toy hauler with an f150 with a 4.9 six , knock yourself out.Oh, the Ram has the Laramie,, but ours is a LONGHORN..

I just pulled my cat scale weigh ticket this morning and the gcw is 26,100 pounds. No Montana weighs 26,100 pounds but the gross combined weight is the weight of the truck at 9900 pounds and trailer at 16,200 pounds for a total of 26,100 pounds. My truck is at 9,900 pounds, the rv at 12,720 pounds and the hitch weight at 3,480 pounds. You total all this up and you get 26,100 pounds gcw. My weight of the truck at 9,900 pounds included the weight of the air-bag hitch, 60 gallon fuel tank full and regular tank full and my wife and i in the truck with a few tools. Weight can add up quickly . I'm not a full timer and if i were then i would weigh more than i do now. This is why i advocate drw as most people weigh more than they think. I would certainly like to have a srw buy my numbers are just to high and i'm sure there are many that weigh more than me.

My comment was for CaptnJohn. personally I like the RAM over Ford. A choice. Both will do the job. Anybody towing a 40 TH with 4.9 six F150 needs to let me know when and where so I can stay the F away. Accident waiting to happen... and yes, a choice. The rear air suspension on the RAM is a must have option for our future set-up.
