Headed to Cody from W Yellowstone
Hi all, we're staying in Island Park to visit Yellowstone and then want to go to Cody for a week. Is it better to drive N to Bozeman and go around or can we get our 40' Monty through YS to Cody? Thanks for the advice.

You can do it. We have 35' (53 total). Went from KoA Mountainside, West YS through the park, and out US 14, to Cody. We stayed at Ponderosa. It's a bit tight.

Oh, one other thing, you will have to pay to go through YS unless you have a pass.
America the Beautiful.
When we were there last, people with a pass were in the fast lane they waved you through the gate. No waiting in line.

We both have Senior Passes. Should be no problem.

Just be aware of 2 things ... you more than likely will need extra time and patience to go thru Yellowstone pulling a long trailer depending on traffic and wildlife events. You also need to be aware that exiting the park on 14 could be considered steep with very little shoulder in places. Mid-morning 2 years ago two separate days, it took us over an hour just to go the @11 miles from the west park entrance to the T where you can go right to Old Faithful.

When are you going? Don't know about snow this time of year, but summertime, then yes there are slow areas.

It is a beautiful drive, especially for the passenger. We've done it twice, 26 foot TT and 34 foot 5'er. I don't regret having done it but I won't be doing it again for all the reasons dieselguy gives. North to Bozeman and down is a much more predictable route.

I have driven thru Yellowstone from Cody to West Yellowstone probably 8-10 times in the last 16 years - pulling my Montana. I am not worried about mountainous driving tho. I don't think this road is treacherous or bad at all. Typical hills, but roads are moderately wide and not super steep or curvy.
Yes, thru Fishing Bridge it is busy, but most of the rest of the direct route isn't - well, except animal sitings for 20 miles east of W. Yellowstone. That varies quite a bit from some stop and go to just normal 30-45 mph.
So take your time and stop at Fishing Bridge for lunch. There is a rest area (?) across the street from the General Store where there is a dining area.
It has been a while but one time we spotted a 1 or 2 year old grizzly kind of wandering around the intersection west of the river. People said it was kind of lost and confused and had been spotted for several days.
Good luck.
Oh, I have also take the route on the east to I90 down to Badge, Belfry to Ralston. But you can cut over near the southern end and go straight in to Cody. I think these roads are pretty wide open and mostly level.
