Upcoming recall on Ford diesel powered Super Duty

Just saw this yesterday. Looks like some of us will be getting another letter in the mail.

MandK, thank you for posting this. Didn’t know about it. Our year and model fits the bracket.

There is a KNOWN issue with the Bosch CP4 fuel pump that when it fails it destroys the fuel system.
$12,000 repair.
This is due to the "Low Sulfur" diesel fuel the US uses. This fuel has less "lubrication" than the European blend and the pump wears out prematurely.
There has been no recall for this issue.
I've been looking into some preventive measures.
NOT CHEAP so far...

question?

So you want to tell me how a software upgrade is going to fix a mechanical issue with the roller in the fuel pump that fails? And why my 2018 fuel pump is not affected, or is it just too far out of warranty for them to fix it.

I know right? I have a recall on the transmission in my 2020 GMC. Apparently the trans can lock up in 8th gear. The temp fix was software to detect and put in limp mode but the fix failed so..... I wait for a new valve body or transmission replacement.

Re the risk of CP4 failure, I've been using Opti-Lube XL in the fuel since reading about it on this site.

I've also been thinking about the bypass kits available (also mentioned on this site) but holding off since we have about 20K miles left on the extended warranty. If it's too easy to wiggle out of a warranty repair, I may consider doing the install soon. I watched a couple installation videos and will probably DIY it.

I recently had ARod of PowerstrokeTechTalk replace my CP4 with a DCR high-pressure fuel pump from S&S Diesel. No more worrying about the CP4 grenading and taking $12000+ with it.

I just did a Google search for SS diesel and found the pump is $1995. Installed extra. I don’t know what that would be but if the pump goes bad you will need injectors and fuel lines to go with it.

Is this (aftermarket fuel pump) what is referred to as “bulletproofing my Ford”?

The DCR pump was $1990 from S&S Diesel. ARod charged (I think?) $365 to install it (I'm not sure because I had him do some other work while I was there). Call him at 947 900-1115. He is located outside Detroit. Tell him Kurt from Alabama says Hi! Check this out:

I guess it could but it usually means making a 6L dependable. The 6L had several problems that could be fixed. Some were good out of the box and some weren’t. I had one and liked it. It gave me no problems and ran five. I got lucky.

Those pump costs are an eye popper! The bypass system using a filter is about $500 + install. Still have to replace the pump if it goes but you limit the damage.

Opti-Lube XL is about $70/gallon and treats 1280 gallons of fuel. (Adds 5 cents/gallon.) At 11 miles/gallon when towing, that means a gallon of lube will last about 14K miles. 100K miles would require 7 gallons of lube so $70x7 is $490. If the fuel is really the problem, not sure what the other lubes cost, but adding a lube seems like cheap insurance.

Yeah I've started using

Archoil Diesel Treatment https://a.co/d/2o26qMG

I'll probably go with the high pressure bypass filter system.

No it is not. Bulletproofing originally refers to replacing the OEM EGR cooler and other components in the Ford 6.0 (F250/F350) with Bulletproof brand parts. We had this done on our 6.0 after we had 2 OEM EGR coolers fail. You can go to the Bulletproof website to see which replacement parts they have available.

We had a full Level 3 Bullet Proof done to our truck at North Texas Diesel.
