Bought a long bed instead of short. Now I need to decide on which hitch. I can keep my Reese and use an adapter for the puck system or buy a hitch designed for the puck system.

Recommend you call Gus Whiteside, at Whiteside Dodge in Mt Sterling Ohio. One of the best most honest guys I’ve ever dealt with in my time.

He can order you one or try to find one for you. Might be worth a try! Same last names!

Tell him Mike P. sent ya.

I had a two wheel drive Ford F250 diesel never again. I have gotten stuck twice, 1 time in mud on level ground front end so heavy sunken about 2in i could not get out. There is not enough weight on the rear axles.
I bought a 2018 Dodge 3500 with self-leveling, it was almost $20,000 cheaper than the Ford.

A moot point now, but for others making a decision, the 2020 GM HD trucks with the standard bed, the bed is a little longer 6”-10” vs 6’-6” I think, plus the 5th wheel/gooseneck location is 2” behind the axle centerline, so a late model Montana should not contact the cab at 90 degrees.

BadMoon, do you know if they changed the bed and side rails? I am curious because after I bought a new Pullrite 2600 for my ‘19 Ram, the first few pages refer to GM’s bed and the need to reinforce it because of the location of their puck system. Ford and Ram are okay without reinforcement. I ordered a kayak rack from US Rack, and they also have special instructions for GM trucks. Just curious if the GM changes are improvements for these issues. I am not slamming GM trucks, had two and both were great. Just curious.

Is the trailer dry 17000 lbs or you will load it up to that... I would think you'd need a dually... the hitch weight will push that SRW over the trucks limits... imo...

GVWR of Monte is 16750 with tongue wt of 2800. New SRW Dodge is rated to pull 20000 with a payload of 4600. Last time our trailer was weighed it grossed out at about 14500 and don’t remember the payload. Never had an issue with our old truck.

Weigh the truck before completing the purchase. We had a 15 supercab Cummins Laramie. 4x4, aisin.. after hooking up 3610 2015 we were over by 300 lbs..on the rear axle and gvwr of truck. Got a dually now

Next time any of you guys are near Elkhart, In. Look at what is pulling the RV’s to the dealerships across the country...whopping majority are ram 3500 dually’s.
That should say enough when you look for your next truck.

Seems the popular brand of Truck is very regional. We've been in areas where just about all you see are Fords, yet another area will be GMs, and others Rams.
So get what fits your Butt and will do the job you're getting it for.

Dad had a duramax chevy. Great truck!. 22 mpg and a great ride. Last GM truck I had was an 84 305.. Hated the 700r4, and the darn thing never idled right. Had several power strokes, 95, 97 2002 lariat, dark shadow and black.. went to cummins in 04, 07, 15 and a 17 now.. The 3500 ram has a stiff ride, but is cadillac quiet. They are all extremely expensive these days.. Im not saying what to buy, but we do love the ram trucks.. ours is a Longhorn..

Congrats on the new truck. I was a fairly loyal Ford guy till it came time to buy the diesel. Then I went with the tried and true Cummins in the Ram.

I will make one more point for the 4x4 though and that is trade in value. Doesn't mean much if you run your truck for 15years but if you trade often like we do then it does matter a lot. The most popular models always bring much better resale/trade. Its just a fact of life. And again if you trade often then there isn't any discussion about higher maintenance costs. I really don't think the newer 4x4 duallies are any taller than an 2x SRW. But crawling into the bed of just about any modern truck is a real challenge!!

The factory specs have never steered me wrong. Compared to my old truck the new one pulls like there’s nothing behind us. The dually argument is well founded but as mentioned earlier, it’s too wide for my driveway.

We just installed the AMP power running boards and has made a big difference for me getting in and out of the truck. For Louise the jury is still out. You’re right about getting in and out of the bed. So far a milk crate has worked ok for accessing the hitch

Dually

Now that I have a dually - I notice dualies and pay more attention. In central Texas there seems to be lots of Ram dualies...lots and lots -no matter if I am in the city or out in the boon docks. I see more Rams pulling fifth wheels. Next I notice Fords. Chevy and GM seem to be far and few between. There are a lot more Chevy/GM SRW trucks than dualies.

Running boards

We had the Amp power running boards on our 2014 Chevy 1 ton. They made it easier to step up into the cab than the stock running boards on our new Chevy. Seems like we had to learn a new way to climb up into the cab.
