STEP RECALL

On the step recall can anyone tell me which rivets were replaced with bolts and how many?? Were there 4 or more?? I know some of you have had the recall done. I've got the recall letter and just have not had a chance to get it done yet. Just looking for info on this??

Two bolts that hinge the second step from the bottom to the third.

There are 4 bolt locations, very top bolts at top step and bolts connecting 2nd to 3rd.

I had the whole set of steps replaced, as there where cracks coming from the bolt/rivet holes on all of my steps, so have the dealer check very carefully

Our recall letter provided specific step replacement, hopefully you got the same letter??
Recall fix was a waste of time, did not work for us, bolts loose almost immediately, spent 6 bucks at Ace, lock nuts, and fixed on my own.

I also did the recall at a dealer and lost a nut the same day. Turns out Keystone or Hickory Springs did not include the correct nut. It should have been a Stover Nut. I fixed it myself with nylon locking nuts and new bolts, but got another recall on the recall. I called Keystone and they sent me the correct recall kit with 4 bolts, nuts, washers and spacers.

Actually, Keystone called me. Might have had something to do with the fact that I called NHTSA. :-)

Got the recall letter in April (2015). Stopped by Camping World (only Keystone dealer in my area). They set up an appointment for me to bring it in. Turns out the appt. wasn't to fix it but to take pictures of the steps and the ID stickers. Said they'd call when the parts come in. They called a month or so later and said that I had to bring it in again for more pictures and there was a recall on the recall. Also the replacement will be the whole step assembly. I hauled it down to CW again for the second photo op. Knowing that the assembly is attached to the rig via 2 bolts and 2 large sheet metal screws, I asked if I could replace it myself. "No", must be done by a certified tech. They will call when the steps come in. Still waiting....

UPDATE - Oddly enough, CW called 15 minutes after my original post that the steps are in. I'll post an update after it's "fixed".

UPDATE 2 - Took it to Camping World for the fix. The did NOT replace the whole assembly as they last stated. After 90 minutes, just 4 bolts, washers and nuts, like others reported on the forum. Will have to get stover nuts to keep them from vibrating off. Steps still "pop" when you climb them.

We never got the recall but noted that the repair had been done at our dealer when the Montana was in for other repairs.

Our steps on our 05 did this about 5 years ago. When I checked into it they told me they have had no problems with steps??? So, fixed it myself, used main part of rivet,the end that has the shoulder on it, drilled into center tapped a 10-32 thread,put back through,and loctite screw and washer into end. that took the place of the end of rivet that popped off. Been good now 5 years and counting. Re used rivet because of shoulder on it.

The dealer ordered the recall kit and took about a week for them to get the parts from Keystone. They installed 6 bolts not just the four. Guess Keystone added the pivot point between the 3rd and 4th step to the recall?

To let you all know- there has been a recall of the original recall and now a recall of the second recall. All to do with what has been stated above. They sent out the wrong bolts and nuts first then replaced them for the second recall and now they are replacing the nuts sent on the second recall.
Our Hickory Spring steps were so bad(mainly the bottom step)that the steps threw my DW off them because they twisted and turned at the same time as she was going down them. She broke her wrist (there has been another post here on the Forum about it)in the fall. While at the Fall Rally we had the steps replaced. All is better now but they put the new steps on in the wrong mounting hole and the space between the steps is 8" except for the top step and the floor of the Monte which is 10". We're working on that problem as I type with Keystone!

Our recall was finally done today and we have the 6 bolts installed as you have described above. We have a bolt on each side just below the 3rd step and two on each side at the top step.

Got the recall letter last spring. After scheduling multiple appointments with the dealer that were canceled as "Keystone had not delivered the repair parts needed" I decided that my wife or I busting our ass on defective steps was not worth the worry /risk. I replaced the factory steps with a set from Torklift called the Glowstep. This was a $550 fix, but what a difference in quality and stability and would do it again in a heartbeat.

The good part - after the recall from Keystone wanting me to scrape the sticker off the emergency exit window that they put behind the ladder, take a picture and submit to them I kind of fired off a nasty note pointing out to them that if they had been as interested in fixing my steps as they were in my scraping a sticker, then I would not have had to replace the steps. Apparently someone in customer relations actually read the note. They are sending me a check for $300 to offset some of my costs. As I expected nothing, this is a nice plus from Keystone doing right.

Took ours in to dealer in Grand Junction last summer. They had the package from Keystone but it did not include the locknuts so they went to Ace and got what they needed. Only replaced four rivets with bolts. I have since replaced most of the rivets with bolts and lock nuts.

Have had the steps replaced twice, both have failed. The bottom front support bar is cracking and flexing along with the bolt problem already discussed. My next step is a new set of aluminum steps and forget the hassle with junk they came with.

Our steps were not on the recall list but they failed as if they were. Fixed them myself and will get a set of sturdy steps at the FCRV rally this summer.
