Crater Lake

We are planning a Summer trip up to Eureka California, then up to Crater Lake. Any travel suggestions on the route we should take? Can anybody recommend an rv park close to Crater Lake? Is there enough in the area to keep us occupied for 3 or 4 days? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Last fall we stayed at Diamond Lake CG which is north of Crater. It has full hookups and was okay. How much time to spend there is hard to answer for someone else. We stayed two nights and toured the rim in one day.

We stayed at Diamond Lake RV park. Great setting next to Diamond Lake and only a few minutes to Crater Lake.

There's enough to keep you occupied for at least 3 or 4 days! We spent a week there.

We stayed at Diamond Lake RV Park, just north of Crater Lake. That's the closest rv park to Crater Lake.

Besides doing a day trip on the road all the way around the lake, stopping at all the sightseeing stops, don't miss the absolutely gorgeous drive along the North Umpqua river. It has a "scenic road" name that I can't recall at the moment.

If you are into short hikes of relative ease, there are several that end at some spectacular waterfalls, especially on the north leg along the North Umpqua. There are maps available for this scenic byway showing all the places to stop.

Then, after that, there's the south leg of that same scenic drive, this one along the Rogue River. We found the north leg, along the North Umpqua, to be the more spectacular of the two but both are worth seeing.

If you'd like to get some idea, check out Vicki's "postcards" at http://vickiandsteve.com . Click on "2010 postcards" and scroll down and look at the postcards for July 12 and July 15. That covers the northern leg of the scenic drive, along the North Umpqua river. We did this segment in June 2010.

Then click on Home, then 2011 Postcards, then look at the postcards from July 8 through July 24. We were there in about early September 2010 for a week to see Crater Lake and the southern leg of the scenic drive. We did the nothern leg along the North Umpqua earlier in the year, starting from Canyonville when with a bunch of moc'ers at Seven Feathers.

It's a beautiful area. I hope you enjoy it. The color of the water in Crater Lake is beyond description. Gorgeous.

By the way, the rim road at Crater Lake does not usually open until on or after July 4th due to snow. The first time we went to that lake, back in about 2004 or 2005, we went in June and had to climb a 10-ft snowbank to see the lake. The rim road was under 8 to 10 feet of snow. So check before making the trip.

We will be going to Crater Lake in July and will be staying at Collier State Park. Full hook-ups.

We were there in 2010. To get the Crater Lake Blue in your photos you need a blue sky with just a few white clouds. If it is overcast with cloud cover--the water will reflect the grey sky. We had a great day with blue sky + a few clouds and late in the day the overcast moved in. By staying afew days you should be able to get great color. If you geocache, there are some neat geocaches in the park. Check out our trip journal for photos.

Ditto to all the earlier posts. Great place to spend a week. Visit the rapids on Rogue River too. Lots to do in the area.
