Water separator on Super Duty's

I saw a notice to drain it monthly on my '08. I didn't even know I had one....
Never drained it on my '06. I guess I'll have to read the owners manual.
I wonder where it is.....

Ozz..Did you not get a CD with your shinny 08. Got one with mine and only fell asleep twice watching it. It shows where all that stuff is but I do not recall that it said drain monthly. Even with some of the junk diesel we use in the busses we do not drain monthly.

Ozz, Rich,

It does say when ever the instrument panel warning shows up or at least monthly The drain valve is under the driver's side front door, against the frame. I think they gave you pictures in the CD.

At first I drained it monthly. Then at every oil change. Eventually I decided to just wait until the light came on. The filter should be (important!) changed at every 15,000 miles anyhow. The light never came on so that's now my preferred method. Just keep tools with you so you can drain it if the light comes on. I'm sure others will feel it's important to drain every month but this is what so far has worked for me.

I have had the warning light come on twice on my 05. The first time I was not prepared and the manual was not clear to me on where the separator was located. Lucky that when it happened I was only couple miles from friends shop with jacks and tools. We could not get the warning to stay off so went to the dealer. There had been modification made to the sensor, too sensitive so I was told when they replaced it or some parts of the separator. The second time I drained according to the manual and all was good.

You need to keep a metric allen wrench and a container to catch the fuel in your truck, think it’s a quart you drain. You are going to get fuel on you because you lay on the ground and look up, know place to go when it starts coming out.

I drain the one on my '06 at every oil change. Have never had the light come on. I think if you buy your fuel from reputable shops you will never have a problem. That's why I buy mine from truck stops because if the truckers get bad fuel they will pass it along and soon no one will stop there.

Folks - I heard about and bought a replacement drain plug. It doesn't need a hex wrench and doesn't fall on the ground when you unscrew it! Got mine at an International truck dealer, but you can find/see it at http://www.xtremediesel.com/index.as...ROD&ProdID=939 I also carry a set of those expensive seperator filters w/us when we travel.

You're welcome! Another handy device is a Fumoto valve, replacing the oil pan drain. No wrenches or dropped plugs. Replace the drain plug, and next oil change just flip the lever!!! http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com/ Glad you're enjoying the truck!!!
