Air Conditioner Advice
Air conditioner advice.
We travel with pets in our lightly used 2003 Montana. We are worried that our aging air conditioner might fail while we are gone during a hot day. The animals would probably not survive a day in the closed up RV with no air conditioning or ventilation. We have never had problems with the AC unit. Would appreciate your advice or experience as to replacing the unit just because it's old and might fail. Our air conditioner is a Duo-therm by Domestic (model 59516.331)
Thanks very Much

If you only have the one unit, I would replace it. On AC units lightly used doesn't help much. Think about your home unit, they basically work the same, every few years something goes wrong and about every ten years or so it makes sense to replace the unit due to energy improvements in the new ones. We have ours serviced every year and I still don't expect them to last much longer than yours have. Just people I'd let it go, but pets home alone I'd replace it.

Brand new ones fail as well. If concerned, safest bet is two ACs, so you have redundancy.

We have two AC's. Even so, we NEVER leave the dogs in hot weather unless I can get someone to check on them a couple of times. Even if AC doesn't fail, could always have a power outage or some other electrical glitch. Usually the park will know someone willing to do that for a small fee.

It is mechanical and could fail at any time, so can a new one. As stated earlier having two gets you better odds that your pets will be ok. Besides if you were ready to buy a new replacement one than you already have the money to add the second one :-). If the first one continues to work it is fine and the unit will cool off quicker and if the old one fails you have your backup for your pets.

Don't forget; two AC units will only work for you if you have a 50 amp site. If you are in a park with only 30 amp only one AC can be turned on at a time.

I have a 2004 model with a 30 amp service. I installed a second 15KW air and a second 30 amp service. I bought a 50 amp dogbone with 2 30 amp outputs. Also installed an additional 120 v plug on the second 30 amp service. Works great!
