Looking at New "2018" 3121RL - ??'s

The wife and I are looking at the possibility of purchasing a "leftover" 2018 3121RL that has been on a lot for a while. If the money were the same we would seek a 2019 model but the discounts on the 2018 are too good to not consider.

I have inquired about how long it has been on the lot and so far the dealer doesn't exactly know. There is some surface rust on the frame, axles and springs but it doesn't seem much different than the 2019's.

Questions for the experienced here:
  • Anything in particular I should watch for during a PDI?
  • Any reason to be concerned about the 18 cu ft RV fridge?
  • Are there known 3121RL items to look for?
I have downloaded a very thorough PDI checklist from here with lots of good info. Now it's a matter of making an informed decision.

Can't help much. When shopping for our new 2007 we found the floorplan we liked at a nearby dealer. But the frame was rusted badly. Dealer said it had been towed down on icy/salted roads and offered to sandblast it and repaint it. But I did not feel good about that. Found an identical one at a dealer much farther away. Frame had no rust. And still has very little after 11 years.

Hard to believe the dealer doesn't have paperwork to show date they received it.

Treat this unit just as you would any other new unit. Being a "leftover" has no bearing on issues with it, but has greater chances for savings over a 2019 units you already know.

I HAVE bought year end leftovers prior without hesitation, and WOULD do it again!!! Buy it and enjoy it, life is too short to not enjoy it !!!!!!

Some units get towed around the states for shows. Who knows where its been. Surface rust no biggie. If you do a thorough pdi and is good, cut him off at the knees for an offer and go from there. Are they a Montana dealer or sell anything dealer?

We bought a 2010 unit when the 2012's were starting to come out and loved it. Not to mention we paid less for it than we did for our truck and we got a deal on that. My guess would be that between time of year and age of unit you can still get some money off what they are asking. When we bought our new unit we wouldn't even look at them if they had a residential frig and we don't boondock that often. 8 years of full timing and our fridges have served us well. On the PDI look for stuff not on the list, particularly on a unit that has been around for a while. Door hinges and other things someone might have messed up looking at it. On our first rig they had cracked one of the landing gear legs, probably moving it around the lot with a forklift.

They are a "sell anything" dealer.

If it is a 2018 it could have been built in 2017. I would look underneath at the coroplast to see if it has been removed. I would look for other signs to see if it was possibly a lemon return and being resold. If inexperienced with such matters get help. Perhaps a mobile rv repair man could help.

The dealer knows, he just dozen't want to tell for fear you might be scared to buy such ... I'm with others, do a very good PDI, check under, above an in everything, make sure cabinet doors open an close an are straight an not sagging when open, doors open an close easily, leveling system works without any problems an levels trailer correctly ...

If it has the newer LCI smart arm make sure it works properly (many problems an recalls with such), check that pull handles on the black an gray tanks are not stuck etc ...

But the biggest thing is service/warranty work, if they are a sell everything dealer the service/warranty work may not be up to par, check on line for owner feedback ...

Good Luck, safe travels

Here are the items that we had a issue with:
The gas line was had a 90+ bend in the rubber hose. had dealer replace with 45 and new line.
Found the second ice maker value and turned it on and it leaked. Had to replace, wrong type fitting.
4 out of 8 of the grease zerks on the leaf spring would not take grease. all 8 were replaced.

if it has been moved alot. check for gaps in the caulking around the out side. Repack the bearings

the kitchen gray drain value is a pain to get to, make sure they show you where it is at

Inside you will find items that need fixed. nothing really talk about

the 3121 comes with residential reg. no issues so far. DW loves it. do a search on this site for more info. All kinds of pros and cons and other helpful info

side note we like our 3121 and it is the prefect size for 2 adults and 10lb dog
we would buy another one, but do a better PDI

hope this helps.
enjoy.

It still has the stickers on the microwave, fireplace, shower, etc. I don't think is has ever been sold?

I would not bother me a bit to buy a close out model; best deals.

I believe if it is a 3121, it has a residential refer. A 3120 has a RV refer. We own a 2017 3160RL, in 2018 they swapped the kitchen to the left side and change the designation to 3120/3121. We enjoy it and 35' is just right for us.

After 18 months I don't believe I have much surface rust, so you should look at this carefully, but probably ok. As a condition of sale they could clean it off and repaint. Also take a good look at the roof.

Good luck.

As browens62 said, ours had the gas line kink problem that has been fixed by the dealer. There was also a furnace wire shield that needed to be added as a result of a service bulletin. Our dealer has already addressed that issue. We had a few minor interior issues that I fixed on my own. Overall, we have been very pleased with the 3121RL. We did a very thorough PDI with the dealer so there were no major issues. The PDI also included verifying that our residential refer makes ice. Most likely you won't get to test your satellite connection, but all models have that issue and this forum has plenty of knowledge to get you though that.
