My name is daniel M Moore and I just bought a 2016 montana fifth wheel 40 ft and I need alot of help first timmer and I tell you the dealer is not much help Im trying to decide on the best truck to get looking for a good used truck that is right for my montana so if anybody can help thank you

Welcome to the forum. Sorry your dealer is not much help. Did not specify model, but if a 40 footer I would be looking for a one ton diesel, and a dually would be even better

Greetings from central Arkansas and welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place for guidance. You will most likely find information you are looking for in previous posts under the search section on the forum. If you don't, just ask and you will get plenty of responses. As the saying goes, "different strokes for different folks", but we've been pulling our Montana(s) with a GMC 2500HD and have a new 3500HD on order (hubby loves the Duramax/Allison).
We replaced the tires that came on our Montana with G614s and purchased a tire pressure monitoring system for those tires and the tires on our truck. We saw what happened to a friend of our's SOB because they had no idea that anything was wrong back there until he looked in the mirror. We hope that if there is a pressure change we will have enough time to pull over and assess the situation and hopefully avoid possible damage.
Whatever you choose, just make sure there's enough truck to pull that 40 footer once you get it loaded. We hope you enjoy many miles with smiles. Be safe and smart.

Welcome to the Forum! Since you're looking for used, what you need to do is look at the manufacturers weight ratings on the door of the truck. Compare that to the dry weight of the trailer adding at least 1,500# for added things. That should tell you if the truck you're looking at is safe to pull it.

And remember that the pin weight listed for whatever model of montana you have, probably isn't reality! Any change to the base unit is going to add to the overall weight as well as the pin weight and then the new owner takes over and adds all the things they do...and the weight goes up! Not sure what brand name you are looking for, but be aware that the manufacturers have changed their capacities pretty significantly in the last 3-4 years. Can't speak for Ford or Dodge, but can tell you that the 2011 Chevrolet/GMC was a huge improvement over the 2010 model.

Glad to have you join the MOC family. Our advice would be a one ton truck as well, dually or not is your choice but be careful of your pin weight what ever it is for the model of 5er you have.

Welcome, a 40' rig will probably have a GVWR of 16K or so. Figure the rig will actually weigh the GVWR. Now take 20-23% of the GVWR and you will be very close to the actual pin weight. That is 3,200-3680lbs.
A good example is my small 35' 3150RL. The GVWR is 14,900lbs and it usually is at 14,500 lbs with empty tanks and just a bit of water. The brochure shows the pin weight to be 2,200 lbs. Actual is right at 3,200 lbs. That is 22%.
Thus my tow rig is a Ram DRW truck.
To get enough carrying capacity in a SRW truck you will probably need to look at a '11 model year and up. Diesel for sure. Watch what R/E axle ratio you get. A heavy rig will want a 3.73 or higher.

Me being a fellow newbie,all I can tell you is my wife and I love our new Chevy 3500. I know you said you were looking used and we looked used at first and after searching a lot of web sites decided new. We were seconds away from buying a Ford 350 (I'm not bashing Ford) and I'm glad we didn't. I test drove both,Chevy and Ford and in my opinion the Chevy Deisel is much quieter and acceleration much quicker on Chevy. I thought we needed a duelly but after talking to a lot of folks and looking at rigs on forums we decided the extra tire expense wasn't worth it. I was a little nervous about how the Chevy would perform pulling our Montana 3711FL, but after a two hour trip home from the dealer,the nerves are fine. Good luck and take your time.

This is why new folks do not buy enough truck. Figure 20-23% of the GVWR for pin weight. The trailer will weight the GVWR. Most new folks do not understand GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, and buy what their dumb **** neighbor says they need. Or worse yet, believe a RV salesman who has maybe pulled a bass boat or a tent trailer.
Before you buy a truck, run the numbers. I do not think a 16K GVWR trailer can be safely towed with a SWR truck. Yes, the factory will give you a tow rating, but they do not take into consideration the total GVWR of the truck with the weight of the trailer in the bed.
Figure fuel, maybe a second tank, weight of the hitch, folks in the truck, gear and then add 20-23% for the trailer weight and you will quickly find you have no safety reserve or will be over one of your ratings.
Buy what you want, but a SWR towing a 16K 5th is just a bad idea.

Welcome from Colorado. Good luck on the truck. A lot of personal opinions, but you won't go wrong with a one ton or larger. As for experience, find a rally near you and go. Between the forum and rallies, you will get all of your questions answered.
