Awning up/down or down/up
OK, my DH and I always laugh about this very important question. I say "put up the awning" to have it extended and "put down the awning" to bring it in. He says the opposite. What does everyone else say? I know what some will say: "just put it in or out." But, hey, that would be too easy . . .

We "put it out" and "roll it up."

"Put down" or "Put up" is not what I would say in either case since the word put is ambiguous. I use "bring out" or "bring in", or "extend" or "retract". Anything else would cause the confusion you are experiencing.
I have also used "set up" to mean extending and brace the awning or even "break down" to refer to "retracting it".
Lastly, I might say I am "taking care of the awning". This means I will extend the awning if it's retracted or if it's already extended, that I will retract it.
It will be fun to hear from others.

I push a button that is marked "In," "Out," with a label above it that says "Awning." When I push the out, it is extended, as in "put out." When I push the in, it is retracted, as in "put in."
But what do I know, I'm in an SOB.
Edited: Oh, and the outside of the edge of the awning, the furthest from the side of the RV, is moving "down," when I push the "out" button.
Hee!Hee! I'd like to be a fly on your RV wall tonight!

On the "Queen Mary", our name for our Monty, should we say furl and unfurl?

When the awning is "up" we don't get wet. When it is "down" we do. Gotta remember though, us'n hillbillies talk different!!

You could "deploy" the awning when you set up camp, and "withdraw" it when you leave.

You could always just leave it the way it came from the factory and get wet! However, when one is deploying, setting up, opening, or otherwise pulling the awning away from the Monty to make a nice shady place to sit you are pulling in a DOWN direction. Therefore, I believe one puts it down to use and puts it up to quit using it. The DW and I just open or close it. Makes it lots simpler!

once the awning is " in position", do you turn the air conditioner up or down to cool off ?

My remote buttons say in and out. When I push the out button, it extends in a downwardly direction. Then, the in button retracts the awning in an upwardly direction.
Manually, I'd say I was putting the awning down for out and up for in.

OK, I give up. in/out, out/in, up/down, down/up. Like Capn Chris said, I guess it's a Mars/Venus thing. So, after the unscientific poll my DH wins. I'll try to remember to say the awning is down (meaning out) and up (meaning in). It won't be easy because my Venus brain thinks it's backward. Anyway, it was fun hearing the responses.

LOL Capn Chris... I wasn't gonna go there, but I have the same semantics issue when I ask DW to lower the gear, then that's followed with "do you want me to raise the trailer", then I reply with "just depress the extend button". It's all the same but as Sharon implies it could be a Venus thing.
SuperDave - another great example. The dialog goes like this. "Raise the air conditioner!". "You mean, lower the temp to make it cooler", "NO! raise the air conditioner temperature because it's running too much and it's getting too cold". "HUH? So I raise the thermostat to stop the air conditioner from running so much?". "You know what I mean. You are just trying to be difficult". "I'm sorry, I misunderstood". "You bet you are sorry, men are so dumb".
btw Sharon - to be fair, I didn't see as many replies from women as men so your unscientific poll could be somewhat slighted. But Venus was the Goddess of Beauty and Mars is full of warlike Martians, so what does that tell you? That's why DW just tells me to "take care of the awning" and I do whatever is needed. I'm a good Martian.

Art, that is so funny. With our new Monty we have a push button, so even us Venus creatures can "put down and put up" the awning now. Notice I'm trying to say it right . . .
