Extended Warranty Contract

My extended warranty is about to expire.

I would like to have input from other people about their extended warranty plans. I have a quote from Good Sam for about 85.00 monthly.

Can I get input of other peoples companies and approximate cost per month?

My first 7 year extended warranty is about to expire and we had paid a lump sum for the full 7 years, like 2,500.00 total. Now, they are only quoting me a monthly policy. Is this common for most warranty companies?

Let me ask you something? Since you had one extended warranty already and it is now due to expire, during the time you had the warranty, how many times did you actually use it? And then, if you did, do the math. How much did you pay for the extended warranty over that time period (not monthly, the entire time), and how muck did the warranty repairs actually cost? Now, did you come out ahead.

If you never used the warranty at all, (after the first year of ownership, as that first year does not count, because the camper is automatically warrantied for the first year) you are better off saving that money, monthly, and keeping it put aside for camper repairs yourself.

I've had 3 different campers with initial extended warranties. Any warranty repairs were all done in the first year. After the first year, I never had a claim. .... 3 different campers, including the one I have right now. Doing my own repairs were much less of a hassle than dealing with repair shops and insurances.

Ditto Dutchman's comment.
We put money into a saving account that can transfer into the checking if needed.
In over ten years and three Fifthwheels, that money is still there. Yes we've had some small repairs, but most handled by us.
Start putting that $85 into an account and soon enough you'll have enough to handle most repairs.

And your extended warranty isn't really a warranty but just a service contract, and service most of the time is questionable.

I’m like some of you. I’ve never bought an extended warranty and I’ve never had a vehicle or camper that I needed one until about a month ago. My 2018 F150 had a wire break in the computer wire harness. That cost me $2320. I’m still thousands ahead. My nephew who works in the shop said I had a lot of trouble my truck. But think about it. He gets 10 mpg and I get 21. So in 62000 miles I’ve spent $10000 less on gas than he has. My truck has more a little more torque and a little less HP than his. I’ll take that any day.

There will always be those that come out ahead or behind on these service contracts. The only sure winner is the company selling it. They set up the contract to put the odds in their favor.

That is why I don’t buy them. Let’s say I’m self insured.

Basic answer I paid aprox $2700.00 for a 7 year contract.
It has replaced of fixed:
air conditioning 700.00 + labor
furnace 500.00 +labor
2 wheal seals 400.00+ labpr
black tank 700.00 +labor
leaf springs 650.00 + labor

Well worth the investment, plus had a extended warranty on my pickup, it paid 2400.00 on a replacement of a turbo.

Extended warranty

I looked into it recently and there were so many exclusions that I didn’t pursue it.

I paid $1400for the first one and $1800 for the second. Both were with EZ Care. I have received over $10K of repairs including a Norcold refer replacement (@ ~ $4K). I didn't renew when the last one expired.

Mine is close to expire and I will probably not get another one. One thing to check on if you do decide you want one is the labor rate they will pay. I found out they will only pay $135 an hour. I have to pay any difference out of pocket. Most labor rates around here are $165 or higher. Don't forget most also have a deductible. I’m going to “self insure” and put $90 a month in a “repair fund” and roll the dice. If no major repairs for a while. I’m way ahead. I’m doing what these service plans are doing, counting on minimal repairs.
