Anaconda replacement
Many CG's have the pedestal in close proximity to where my shore power connector is. I have a short (6-8ft) #8-4 cord. Can I use this for 50 amp connection?

With #8 cable, you will be limited to 40 amps. You would need #6 to get to the 50 amp rating. So, if you can keep your loads in check, that cable will work, just not at the full load of 50 amps per leg.

Concur...recycle that short piece and go proper from the start. Brain farts happen and so so fires. John

#6 is what 50 amp cables for our rigs are made with, both for the standard cable and for an extension cord. I carry a 25 ft extension cord in addition to our regular cord. I also have a 50 foot, 30 amp cord, for use when we are dry camping with our generators or when we are just too far from an outlet when at a couple of relatives properties, and we have both 50 amp cables connected with the 30 amp cable. When doing this, we are using minimal electric, have the fridge and water heater on gas. If you have to go longer than the two 50 amp cords, you will be limited on your power loads.

My 50 amp cord has 3-#6 and 1-#8.
If the #8 wire is good enough for a 30 foot cord I figured it would be good enough for a 6-8 foot cord.

The number 8 conductor is the ground wire, and it does not carry current like the other three wires. The other three wires are two hot wires and one neutral, and they all carry current. So, no, #8 cable, will not handle 50 amps. #10, which is used for 30 amp cables, #8 will work for 40 amps load, and #6 is used to carry load for a 50 amp rated cable.
