Hitch size

I have a 2020 3121RL. I'm getting a new GMC 3500 long bed with OEM puck system and want to purchase a new hitch. Do I need 16K 20K or 25K size hitch?

I would go at least 20k, I think the 16k you would be right at or just over the capacity of the hitch.

The GW of your 3121R is 16k....a 20k hitch would be fine.

Are you getting a dually and maybe a bigger 5er or a toy hauler someday? Might play into your decision. I have a 20k hitch for our 3121, plenty with some cushion.

I bought a 21K. My rig is only 11,697 lbs. I figured bigger is better.

It all depends on the trailer GVWR. If it's 16k, my take is that you would want a hitch rated at greater than the max load. You can't put a price on safety, but I don't know what your budget is. I picked up a Husky 26k for $520 a few years back that is more than up to the task for my 18k 5th wheel. In my humble opinion of course. Good luck!

I have a 24K Curt on mine because it did not cost that much more than a 20K hitch.

My hitch theory has always been...."Better to go bigger and be safe than a hitch on the borderline requirement""

I'm with Jim. Never know if you will haul something else and would need more from your hitch. I went with the newer Reese M5 at 32K with my RAM. I was going with the M5 series and the cost difference was not that much.

I pull a 2020 3121RL Montana with a 2019 F-350 4X4 short bed and got a BW 18K slider and love it. I wouldn't go with anything less than a 18K hitch! Just saying. Enjoy and be safe out there amongst-em!!

Don't get a hitch based on the weight of your camper. Get a hitch based on the max tow rating of your truck. Even if you don't need it right now. You never know what you'll be towing in the future. You don't want to limit your RV options or the towing capacity of your truck because of your hitch rating.
At the time when I purchased my 2012 3500HD long bed dually I didn't know what size camper I was going to get. The max 5th wheel tow rating on my truck is 23,400. So I purchased the Reese Elite series 25K removable hitch so I can get the max towing capacity from my truck if needed. You're spending a lot of money on a new truck and want to be able to use every pound of towing capacity you're paying for...Don't skimp out on the hitch to save a few bucks and possible regret it in the future. Just something to think about...

Good afternoon -

I have a 3500 Dodge Ram and went with the largest hitch that would fit my truck's puck system. Having to purchase a new hitch when trailers were upgraded, I finally went the route mentioned.

I find that I am able to adapt to the towing need! I purchased the Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter for Ram OEM 5th Wheel Towing Prep Package - 25,000 lbs, and the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Above Bed - 21,000 lbs.

In essence, I agree with TennTom and DMaxDually, buy big, buy once and enjoy!
