It looks like there aren't any high mileage Montanas out there. I have 39 respondents in the mileage poll so far. 71% of 5er ownwers have less then 15,000 miles on their rigs.

I never broke out the 20K plus category in detail, but there seems to be about 50% who have had a suspension re build to get that far.

I haven't added up my log yet but I have about 40,000 on my Montana. This past week in St. John NB I broke a spring shackle. I had checked them before I left on that trip and didn't notice anything. St. John Spring Services came out and fixed it. (Thanks Good Sam ERS) They said another one looked bad so I brought it to them and they changed them all. Most of the holes were elongated and all of the bushings were shot. One of the equalizers needs to be replaced but they did not have one. They told me it was to be expected with that kind of mileage. One of the mechanics went right home to check his new used unit.

If you need help in the area that is a good place to go. They changed all the shackles and all the bushings and worked until 7:00 PM and charged me $169 Canadian.

Thanks for the information.

Please check your log and post if the actual mileage is significantly different. (Oh and don't forget teh original mileage from the manufacturer to the dealer.)

I think I will set a maintence flag to take mine to a spring shop at 30,000 and have it checked out.

How many miles do you think you have on the Montana?

Jerry,

I'm curious to know if you ordered the parts and did the work yourself, or had a shop in your area do it? I'm interested in modifying mine before trouble sets in, and I'm not very far south of you.

Thanks,

Don

WOW I am impressed Jerry. Yours were a lot further gone then mine were when I started to swap the parts. I also see your original shackles are a slightly different shape (rounded ends, mine were clipped corners)

Thanks for the info Jerry. It is also easy to see that you have never had 00-8 performed. You really need to have this done. Check for cracking above the spring holders on the I beam.

Jerry,

Thanks for the info. After looking on an Oregon map and seeing where Warrenton is I'll try to find a shop closer to home. I thought you were in Medford.

My 04 2980 has about 2000 miles on it and I noticed significant tire wear on the rear axles. Had my dealer check it out and found a miss allignment. The dealer then had me take the trailer to a alignment shop. The alignnment shop found a severe toe in problem, a bent rim (no sign of the rim being damaged on a curb) and worn nylon suspension bushings. The wheels were aligned (warranty), the spare tire was swapped with the bent rim and at the alignment shops recommendation had a heavy duty greaseable Dexter suspension kit installed (cost $290). The nylon bushings used in the original suspension are ok if you buy a unit and park it at the lake but not for units that are on the road. I can see that when the nylon bushing is worn that the play in the suspension could cause the failure in the picture.

I have worried about my aluminum 15 inch rims. I don't think they are bent and seem to holding well but upon inspection my tires are rated at 65 psi while my rims are rated at 60 psi. I don't understand what they were thinking on this.

The spring hangers and bolts and bushings on our 2001 2850RK (28000 miles)were replaced yesterday at Alpin Haus (which I am not real happy with) in Amsterdam, NY Cost was $297 for labor and $70 or so for parts. The new bushings have grease fittings, seven on each side of the trailer. I would think this should solve the problem, which should never have happened in the first place. Thank you to the forum for alerting me to look for the problem.

That's what is great about the forum Ralph. No snowjobs here. the members tell it like it is. It would have been a lot more expensive if you didn't have this info. Preventive checks can reduce cost.

When I bought mine there was no MOC. I initally found out problems through Good Sam. I wish this forum would have been there when I bought mine.

So stay with us.

Sorry about your problem Ralph but it sounds like you got a first class fix.

I've spent the last couple of days working on the spring hangers and brakes. Just before our trip to Glacier and over to Goshen, IN and then back home I had my brother check the shackles. He said that they were just starting to show some wear but that I could probably make the trip and we'd check them when we got home. So when we got home we checked them and they were GONE! Two of them were almost completely worn through. One or two more "big" bumps and they'd probably have broken!

Needless to say we replaced them. And we replaced them with some REAL ones!

I cannot believe that a manufacturer would put such flimsy shackles on these heavy rigs. The original hangers are thin. The bushings are thin plastic. They have no grease zerks. The replacement hangers are THICK heavy duty shackles. They have brass bushings. All the bolts and the equalizer have grease zerks on them. This is the way they should have been done in the first place. I've got a couple of pictures I'll post tomorrow.

Folks these things are hard to see unless you are looking for them and they are sort of "out of sight out of mind" type issues. But please check them and replace them the minute they show wear. These things may be part of the reason so many of us are having trouble with our tires.

Unlike Gruffy's rig which had a lot of rust mine had none. We live and have traveled only in relatively dry climates.
