Check Valves

Question, when I was winterizing my unit, I was having trouble pumping the antifreeze into the system. I have a dedicated line for getting antifreeze from the container, the water pump pulls it into the unit. Anyway, it had a back flow valve on the line, which I though was weird and might have caused the issues I was having getting the pump to suck up the antifreeze. While looking at the fittings, I noticed that the black tank flush did not have a back flow preventer, and I think it is supposed to. SO after seeing this, I swapped the valves, so the antifreeze inlet no longer had the check valve, and the black tank flush would not have one. Figured maybe it was a mix up during the build?

Anyone else witness this, thoughts on it? Want to make sure that by switching the valves I was doing what made sense...

Our black tank flush does not have a backflow/check valve, but does have an airbreak valve at a high point in the rig, and this acts like a backflow preventer. The check valve at the fitting you are using for winterizing may be stuck closed, which may be why you weren't able to get antifreeze into the system. When I get done flushing the black tank, the water runs out of the hose from the airbreak valve only, and the water on the tank side of the airbreak valve drains into the black tank.

I had same problem when i went to winterize, I couldn't get the antifreeze to suck out of the bottle I switched the valve with black tank flushed which didn't have check valve work fine. I think they mixed the two up

dhuhn, sounds like you had the same issue I had, I also have a 2016 I think I might have to look at some others next time I am at camping world and see what the set up is on a few of them. I just want to make sure by swapping the valves I didn't cause an issue.

Kozzy it should'nt cause an issue it just a back flow preventer, it would make more sense on black tank flush where you dont want the water going back up your hose.

If you don't have a check valve on the winterizing inlet, your antifreeze will run out once you have installed the antifreeze.

100% agree with both Rohmann post. When I winterize I can open a faucet two days later and water still has pressure. With out the check valve there would be no pressure.

yeah, i'm going to be changing the valves back around I was at the RV show last week looked at several units, several manufactures, and the way it was is correct.

I'm glad when I winterize I do both methods, blow the lines out AND use antifreeze, since I obviously screwed up the antifreeze part this winter.. I'm sure even with the check valve switched, the Antifreeze is still in the system..

Since the winterizing port is not used much perhaps the check valve was stuck shut. Mine has done it before. Just stick a small screw driver in the port and unseat it. Also ... many of us have had to use 2 hose washers in the winterizer port as one just doesn't seal it up well enough. I used to be the "pink stuff" guy as well, but the past 3 years, I've went solely with air and then pouring a quart of antifreeze down each sink/tub trap. Works for me ...

Don't forget to put pink antifreeze down the washer drain and open the supply valves located there when purging the system with air only.
I do this and all is good every year.

No worries about the washer stuff ... deleted that run years ago as we don't have need for a washer. All it did for us was make the water in the bedroom sink stink to high heaven. Good point for others though.

Usually it takes a little assistance to get the pump to siphon the pink stuff... next time, the hose that goes into the bottle, try "siphoning" it like you use to take fuel from the neighbors gas tank... think there is an air lock between both sides of the pump. Make sure you leave one spigot open also. About a minute after this, the pump will be pulling it out of the bottle. This usually works for me. ...Put back the check valves like they were originally.
