Spring Hangers on 3295RK 2007
Have a few pictures of the right rear spring hanger that just broke off on our last trip from south Texas..(will share pictures if anyone would like to see) I had planned on installing the Heavy Duty Shackle Kit from Morryde, pack the wheel bearings, and check the brakes before we started our trip to Alaska in May, but was suprised to find the spring hangers broken. Have any of you seen this.

I had one break in Florida in February. It broke off even with the I beam.
Had a mobile welder come in and put it back in place and weld it, he then welded a piece of angle on the frame and to the hanger on front and back for more support.
The hanger is 4 inches long and he said most are 3 so it gives more flex.
This was on the door side rear hanger. The welder said he has seen this a lot and the units that do not have shocks have a lot of broken springs.
Just another day in RVing.

Jerry,
Please post some pics of the damage. Several folks have had similar problems. This sort of thing can be very dangerous to the rig as well as to anyone around it when it fails. It would also be nice to see pics after it is fixed.

On our 2007 Alaska trip, we broke on bolt holding the spring in the rear hanger. I am not sure when it broke because we did not discover it until spring 2008. The hanger was fine. I got it fixed at a trailer shop who also strengthened the frame by adding angle iron beams between the hangers on each side. I have later realized this is the same as the MorRyde X-Factor mod to strengthen the frame. It sure seems better now.

do you think a grease fitting would have help? i added wet bolts last fall.

My left rear spring hanger broke loose (both sides) after I had installed the wet bolt kit. Different dynamics affect the spring hangers v. the shackles.

Sorry paddler67, the wet bolts won't help the hangers where the breaks occur. They only help keep the bushing lubricated to help prevent wear at the shackles.
The hangers breaking at the welds could be poor workmanship, too overloaded, too many potholes, bad luck or combinations of this stuff.
A search should find some really good reinforcements of these hangers that owners have done.
BTW Steve, what was done for the hangers in that picture?

I agree ,"it is VERY poor workmanship".... The hangers breaking at the welds "IS" poor workmanship !! I will think a long time before I purchase another MONTANA...Or that is how I feel tonight after working on it for the last two days,trying to get ready for an Alaska trip in a couple of weeks...It seems that the people at MONTANA don't care ...Goes along with the quality of some of the Tires they purchase..( MISSION for one)

Remember the spring hangers are part of the Lippert frame. Montana isn't the only user of the Lippert frame, so be careful of the brand you do buy.

On the way back fron Fla this spring, we had a problem with the rear spring on the passenger side of our 2008 3465SA. The center bolt broke and allowed the axle on that side slide back. Cost of repair was a tire, spring and very expensive on a major highway overnight. This is the second time this spring has been replaced. It seems undersized for the weight.

You will see the same thing under many SOB's. We had all of the above happen to us which is why we went to the Mor Ryde IS system.. No spring hangers, no springs, no shackles, no axles..plenty of peace of mind.

Good day to all... I agree it is a REAL problem if you are on the way to or from Alaska.. Really the Alaska highwat is not all that bad...

Jerry, I "grew up" in Wichita, McPherson, and Wamego. My Mom graduated not far from you, at Halstead High. And we lived 25 or so years in Topeka.
Art, we were still under warranty so Keystone (or maybe Lippert) paid to fix it after our dealer faxed or emailed pictures to them. Our dealer sent us to a welding shop that deals with trailers. They built a new hanger.
Like others, I've seen other brands with this same problem. Sure seems like a lot of weight for no stronger than those hangers appear to be. A little gusseting might be in order.

I had the same problem last Fall in a campground up in Pennsylvania. We hired a local welder to come out and repair it. He did and it seemed like it would be fine. Then when I recently had the rig inspected I asked them to look at the repair job, this may have been a mistake but they looked at it and found the new weld was cracking. So we had new parts welded on. The new job was done by a Certified Welder and the job looked a lot better. I think this is one of the most serious types of repairs that should be done right not by patch work. If you have had it done by an uncertified welder go ahead and have someone who really knows what they are doing to look at it. John
