Water Heater Solenoid
Thanks MOC! My water heater would not fire off this morning. Of coarse MOC would know what to do. Thanks to the thread previously on MOC, it was a snap to diagnose. Sreigle, Snfexpress, and Carl N Susan describes what to do. Snfexpress described how to test those solenoids and what they should read. Sure enough one of the solenoids was bad.
I asked for just the solenoid as a replacement. But I was told they could not order them anymore. So I sprung for a new valve for $94 right off the parts shelf. Easy fix. I don't know what a mobile repairman would have been or a dealer charge. Might have been able to find that solenoid on the web if I had wanted to wait for one.
Anyway it is fixed!

Not to make you feel bad Joe, but here is where you can buy a replacement kit (2 solenoids) for $16.99 (plus shipping I am sure).

Thanks Carl, good info. I now have an extra solenoid and valve. So I am fixed for the next time if one solenoid goes out. I think everyone needs a couple of those solenoids in their parts grab bag. They can save your bacon in time of need.
As a side note. That brass ell at the top of the old valve for the inlet had a buildup of old dried up pipe dope in it blocking about half of the gas flow. The factory puts some pipe sealer in there and the old one had way more than it needed.

Jay,
I don't have any pics. If you look behind your water heater door on the outside, you will see the gas valve with two black cylinders attached to it with 4 wires coming from the cylinders. Those are the solenoids.
Here is a link on ebay you can view the valve.
WH Gas Valve
Carl gave a web site (American RV) where you can buy the solenoids which are a lot less than the cost of the entire valve with the solenoids.
