Mission Tire Carnage

Check this out...tire blew driving a hole through the floor under the stove and cupboards. Hole is 1' x 3' long. Moving on I-81 at Winchester VA with cruise set at 63MPH. Estimate for repairs is $5,000. Photos from the inside out & the culprit.

If those are the original tires for your rig, most likely they are date stamped for 2006, which in turn would make your tires over seven years old. I believe the recommended life of an ST tire is five years max. Our Goodyear 614's have a little longer lifespan that is rated from five to seven years. Sounds to me like you had an accident waiting to happen for at least the last couple of years. The tread will look fine, but ultraviolet decay and weather will take it's toll on the tire in an unseen manner. I hope if you have more of those same tires and they are indeed that old that you immediately replace them for your safety. Hate to be the bearer of news that you probably don't want to hear, but it is a warning for others who try to extend their tire life. We were fortunate with our Missions that they started to fall apart after two years without damaging the rig.

Since our rig was a 2010 purchased in 2011 our tires were almost 2 years old when we took delivery (built in 2009). Add that to less than ideal tires to start with and problems are on the horizon.

In fairness, if you've ever just dealt with cars and trucks you wear tires out before it's an issue. Trailer tires and age are something no one, especially the dealers selling used rigs, ever mention.

To the OP I bear your misfortune. Over the years M/H, towables, and now fifth wheels I continue to learn and experience tire issues. We have replaced our China bombs with Michelin XPS Ribs after weighing the unit and studying each wheel weight so we could get a good tire. The 614s were out of our budget and with our TR-6 rims I can only air to 80 lbs. Many Monty owners are having a good experience with the Michelins as well as other brands. Read all you can about tire issues on this site. The posts were very helpful for us to decide our needs. Look closely at the speed rating for any ST tire. I hope your repairs go smoothly. Be a good friend and share your experience with them for no one likes to read about this type of misfortune.

Sorry about your damage, look closely at LT tires as replacements.
