Learning curve...

so I says to myself, "Hershel, you have a good GPS in the truck, that will work for walking around, you don't need a hand-held" I have a nice wide-screen Nuvi 1400 (I think that's right)
Well, it did not work well at all, I did switch to 'pedestranian' mode, but the only way it would work at all is just to go to 'Where am I?' and, with the object GPS reading written on a scrap of paper, start walking and compare the readings, adjust accordingly. Also, the battery must be bad, as it goes dim and only lasts for 15 minutes or so.
Probably not what the Geo-folks would call a good plan.
Before Sue woke up, I grabbed the credit card and off to Amazon I went :0. Did a little research on the Geo-forums and ordered a Garmin
Oregon 550. Looks like it will keep me from getting lost, and take a picture of me being lost if it comes to that....
Placed our first two Caches, now have to lear how to document them on Geocache.com (OzzOzz)
As always, input from you who have walked that path, welcomed.

Jim, I am not an expert by any means but I learned that I should mark a waypoint where I parked the truck so the gps can always get me back to it! Sometimes those geocaches take you cross country, over hills, through ravines, and you lose sight of the truck and lose sense of direction. Those in AZ we noticed this particularly.

And, something PapaBeav taught me at the Mt. Shasta rally awhile back - always look for the cache in the simple places. Like stuck to the back of a guardrail. There have been times we thought we had a DNF until we checked those places even though the gps had the cache 20 feet from there.

Good advice! We went out and did 10 today, took us about 6 hrs. I will do the waypoint deal for the truck. Handy for getting the 35 miles back to home base...
