Resource for towing specs...

Is there a good website that has listings for the different manufacturers, and the towing capacities from year to year.

I know that you can look it up for one model, but then you have to do that for each different model, and that's a pain. Especially when you are trying to compare one year to another, and brand to brand...

This is a start, but remember that within like vehicles there will be different ratings due to accessories, factory installed or aftermarket installed, that will affect what can be carried or towed. https://www.trailerlife.com/trailer-towing-guides/

If you are looking to buy a truck to pull your Montana keep it simple and just buy one of the new 2020s...they all have great capacity these days.

Ha more than capacity it will back you up as well.

Ford's Trailer Reverse Guidance camera system has been extended beyond conventional trailers to also work with goose neck and fifth wheel trailers and the Super Duty now gets the Pro Trailer Backup Assist that is on the F-150.

Thanks for the info guys!!!

I have been a Chevy guy my whole life, and quite frankly, I have had really good luck with mine, and I don't have anything to complain about. The Allison is an absolute beast of a delivery system.

I was super excited when I heard that the 2020's were going to have a 10 speed Allison. That had for to be the ultimate towing transmission. And, with almost a 1000 ft-lbs if torque, it shouldn't have any issues either. But, that bubble was burst when I learned that the 10-speed is not an Allison, but rather an Allison branded transmission. Not that I don't trust GM, but I KNOW that a true Allison transmission would be bullet proof.

Then, Ford comes along and puts down a 1050 on torque, backed up by a 10 speed as well. SMH. There is one thing that I like about the Ford, and that is the interior room, as they are a little bit bigger. It also took Ford a while to realize that there is no replacement for displacement, so that's a strike on their best practices.

I have always liked the styling on the Dodges as well, and had a second generation 12 valve Cummins that was an awesome pulling machine, IF you wanted to only go 55 MPH. The tranny in that thing was terrible. And, while I realize that that have improved them, my son in laws father had a newer dually that proved otherwise. I don't think a Dodge is in our future.

That narrows it down to Chevy vs. Ford.

But alas, a NEW truck isn't in our future either. Don't have the bank right now. Hence the reason I needed to research older trucks to figure it what is what, and make sure that whatever we get will pull safely. So, that leaves me with getting a Chevy, or a Ford with a 6.7. Just not new...

WOW!!!

That's a lot of information there, and that probably makes it even more confusing!! I did t realize there were all that many options/configurations that changed the maximum towing that greatly...

Whichever vehicle you choose - make sure once you have selected a vehicle that you check the sticker on the drivers door for the proper GVW’s. DO NOT TRUST the sales person. Not that they might be just trying to sell you what they have in stock but unless the sales person deals in daily fleet sales their knowledge of GVW’s & towing could be very limited. Do not discover after your purchase you don’t have enough truck! Trucks all look the same - it’s what’s under the skin that matters! Check the GVW on the door!

It still does the job, still runs great and still gets compliments on its condition at 125,000 miles

I don't disagree with either one of these posts. BUT, when you look at the eye chart that is the Ford towing guide, which, BTW, is probably the best one out there, there is NO indication what options couple up with which TOWING options to make the combinations. The GVW isn't always the clearest either.

I would be totally peeved if as an INFORMED buyer, I spec'ed out what I wanted (needed), and I got the truck in, and the door said something different than I was anticipating.

I'll start a new thread this evening with the information that I have that doesn't make a lot of sense (at least to me)...
