Secret to lighting the pilot?
I used the oven a few days ago then moved camp. When trying to light the oven again it still takes a long time to get the pilot lit. I move the knob to pilot, push it in, and hit the electric spark. Then again. Then again…. Is there a secret (beyond patience and perseverance)?

Do the top burners work? If you turned off the gas for travel, it's possible air got in the line and you need to bleed the air by turning on and then lighting one of the top burners before trying to get the oven pilot to light. In my experience once the top burners light the oven pilot will light after a couple of attempts. Good luck!!

I did not turn off the propane. Top burner lit fine and in fact was on at the time as DW was making some yummy chili to take off the MT chill. It’s always taken a while to light the pilot, even on our previous high country.

Understood. Mine always takes quite a while to light, but it's always after the propane is off. My 2014 Montana took forever to light and didn't have an igniter!! So, I guess it's "patience and perseverance"!!

I've gotten used to lighting the pilot with a small flashlight and a butane bbq lighter. With the flame going on the lighter, I put it against the port where the pilot flame will be and with it held there, push in and hold the knob, for maybe 30 seconds, and usually get lucky with a pilot light burning. I know the following won't really help much, but it was posted years ago, possibly on this forum, just don't remember. Enjoy
Lighting RV oven pilot light
Get a butane mini torch, easy to use, then sit back, relax, get on your knees, tilt your head till it hurts, push in the knob at the same time while holding the lighter, re-focus your bi-focals, turn on some music, this will drown out your DW asking if you have it lit yet, and after locking up your knees and your neck, drag yourself up, off the floor, readjust your glasses and head to olive garden for dinner and a few drinks!!!!!come back, get some rest and try again. 😊 Oh, did I mention this is the hardest thing to lite and good luck...

Since it is a 2022 unit it should have the auto light sparker on the oven, which is sounds like it does. It might be that the sparker is not quite in the correct position for the spark to ignite the propane. Check to see if the sparker is just a little off center of the flame tube. If it is, it may need to be move just a fraction of an inch so the spark is getting to the propane to ignite it. Be careful not to leave the propane running to long or it could fill the oven and you may get a real surprise when it does ignite. Also since it is a NEW unit this should be covered under warranty and the dealer should be able to replace the igniter under the warranty.

what I found...
I was having similar problem, and thinking the pilot did not light.
After following the advice from above and doing bad contortions on this old body (creaks and pops) I was able to look in the lower oven...
the pilot itself was lit, but had to turn the knob more than I thought to get the oven to light.
I have only baked one pizza this week, and have not used the oven again
hope this helps

The trick is to get the gas flowing. Easiest way to do that is to first light off one of the cooktop burners and allow the gas to burn for a few seconds. Then proceed to light the oven. But you did that as discussed in post #3.

Pilot Light
What I do when the Bride wants the Oven Lit.
Left Hand on the Knob to Pilot Mark, the Right Hand using a Butane Stick Lighter, Placing it where the Pilot is.
I push the Knob, and Turn a Few degrees Rt or Left, till she lights, then I move to the Temp she tells me.
Thx,
Barman54

I hold oven temp knob pushed in. Then light pilot with butane lighter at pilot flame location. DON'T WAIT TO SEE PILOT FLAME. TURN TEMP KNOB TO ANY TEMPERATURE WHILE CONTINUING TO HOLD TEMP KNOB PUSHED IN. Burner will ignite. Pilot light is really hard to see. Just trust that it lights almost immediately even if you can't see any blue flame. The comment including trip to a restaurant was fabulous!

Our oven needs a flame to heat the thermocouple that opens the gas flow in the oven. When the thermocoulpe is warm enough the pilot will light and then you can set the bake temp. Standing pilot lights burn propane all the time. We don't use the oven a lot so to save propane we don't leave the pilot lit.

I had a similar issue on a oven that had just passed it’s warranty period. We hadn’t used it. Our bad. After tubing etc I discovered a situation where the oven knob was not fitting the stem of the gas valve properly or the stem was not long enough to touch the knob when you pushed it in. Solution: take the knob off and stuff small piece(S) of tin foil into knob and put it back onto valve stem. In our case this worked. Good luck.

Fewer gymnastics
See photo. With this tool, all I do is push the pilot knob in till it lights.
Children, I by no means, recommend doing this at home. But IF my picture inspires your imagination, happy birthday. Bake a cake or a pizza at your own risk. I do it often without gymnastics and have lived to write about it.

Do you close the oven door. That would be even more fun. Stand I front of the door at your own risk. How much fun can we have?

I love this thread! We are new to gas cooking and have been having a real hard time lighting the oven. We thought it was just us, so we’re glad to see that it’s others too.
