2019 South west spring trip

DW and I planning a trip through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado next spring. Some of our stops will be Gallup NM, Albuquerque, Pueblo Co. ,Gunnison/ Montrose Co. Any info as to places anyone has stopped at for over night and checking out the sites, etc. I have other stops planned but have not traveled through the above areas noted. Any information would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance to all who may respond, Keith

Fools Hollow State Park is a great place in Show Low AZ. It is a mountain area so weather will depend on the time you plan to visit. Concrete pads with full hook ups near a small lake.

We took a similar trip in the fall of 2014. One of the highlights was Page, AZ, which is at the top of the state, near the middle, on Lake Powell.

The most interesting thing to see there is Antelope Canyon, of which there is Upper and Lower. We did Lower in 2014, and went back for the Upper this summer. This is an amazing place! Bring a camera or smartphone. Look it up online.

Horseshoe Bend is nearby, and is worth a visit and some pictures.

We stayed at Page Lake Powell Campground. It is clean and well maintained.

Other things worth seeing and doing are:

Durango Silverton Railroad

Cumbersome Toltec Railroad (Chama, NM)

Million Dollar Highway north of Silverton

Telluride, CO

Mesa Verda National Park.

If you are coming to the rally, look us up. We can share pictures and more information.

When we go to Albuquerque we stay at Enchanted Trails. We also like to get tickets on the Rail Runner and ride up to Santa Fe and spend a day up there. The Rail Runner is cheap, particularly if you buy tickets on line and it takes you right to downtown Santa Fe.

You can reserve for free at Antelope Canyon. If you don’t show up about an hour before your time, they give your spot to someone else. The Navajo own and run these canyons, and they do a great job. The guides are very good.

If you are going thru the San Luis Valley (Alamosa area of Colorado) then late spring is a good time to visit the Great Sand Dunes NP. Weather is cooler and Medano Creek will be running across the base of the dunes (wadeable). Summer is very hot and creek is dry. And you can pick up the Cumbres & Toltec railroad just south at Antonito (great day trip).
And from there US 285 goes down to Santa Fe and I-25 to Albuquerque.

After Albuquerque we will be driving to Pueblo Colorado. Has anyone taken the Rt 25? What is the drive like. IE- type of roads, condition, Average mph? Did anyone do this drive in one day?

I 25 from Albuquerque is an easy one day drive but you need to slow down north of Glorieta due to winding and fairly steep roadway. The speed limit on the NM portion is 75 until you get to Raton and then it is 65 into Colorado. I suggest you don't drive the Colorado portion if there is extreme wind as it tends to blow high profile vehicles off the road.

Sounds like a great trip! We really enjoy the 5 Nat. Parks in Utah as a start along with access to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The entire region is filled with Indian ruins-Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, etc. In some cases the mountain RV parks may not be open until mid April so check in advance. IMO--I don't worry much about 75 mph speed limits--I rarely go faster than 65 and that is downhill. So--drive safely and enjoy the views.

We also stayed at Enchanted Trails in Albequerque. It's nice campground. Wanted to take the tram up to the top of the ski area but it closed 2 days before we got there for maintenance.

Sky City RV Park. It is at a Indian Casino close to Gallup. Very nice, inexpensive, concrete sites, full hook-ups, etc. Be sure and sign up for one of their cards. Gives you lots of perks.
