Lippert Hydraulic pump reservoir leaking and fix

Hello,

Just went out to load a couple of items we will need for July 4th trip and noticed a fluid pool under the 2003 Montana 3670. Upon opening the front compartment, I could see the Lippert pump seemed to be leaking in the area where the reservoir mates to the the pump. Two questions, will this unit replace the OEM reservoir Lippert 177420 2 Quart Replacement Hydraulic Reservoir Kit? And I I cannot get it in time for my trip on the 4th, can I simply refill the reservoir brace the tank underneath to minimize vibration and go camping without worry? Also, has anyone replace their tank with the one referenced above, it it a very hard job, any tips?

Thanks

Robert

Or could I get by with simply an o-ring change or o-ring clean and replace in the short term? Also, does the unit use ATF fluid or Hydraulic fluid?

Thanks

Robert

As long as the tank isn't cracked, you should be able to replace the o ring. And the Lippert recommendation for fluid is pretty much any ATF, so long as it isn't type F.

Just got home. I removed the tank and there was a lot of sealant all over the mating surfaces and o-ring. I cleaned everything up but the o-ring could not be saved. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding o-ring size and brand?

Thanks

Doing a little research, I found, on the Lippert site, an O-ring, for a 2004 model, that may be the same as for your rig. If it's the right size, you probably can source it locally from an auto parts store or hardware store. If not, Lippert can probably sell you one.
O-Ring; 3 47/64'' Id; 4'' Od; .138 Dia

Thanks guys, it seems that a log of people are having problems with a leaking lippert. Here is the o-ring must of them seem to be using for a replacement with some success.

QN70348 from Global o-ring

Cross Section .210''
Inside Diameter 4.350''
Outside Diameter 4.770''
Nominal CS 3/16
Nominal ID 4-3/8

Thanks again,

Robert

Don,

I have several coming in from Global orings tomorrow morning. Did those rings work for you?

Fellow 2003 3670RL owner,
My 3670 pump did the same thing about a year ago. I found the O-ring online and replaced it with minimum effort. the only tricky part is to remove the hydraulic fluid from the reservoir first. here are the specs on the part: MSC Industrial supply, pkg of 2 Viton 70 O-rings #348, part #02245827 and cost about $10.96.
Make sure to thoroughly clean the reservoir area and don't forget to remove the old seal from the reservoir groove before re-assembling it.

Good luck.

never had to use them yet, I got 4 of the years ago for that emergency that never happened, if you know what I mean.

I would have used a boat bilge pump

My Dad has this same year RV and the same problem. He is very ill so I am trying to fix a few things and the leaking fluid is a big one, It was my thought it would be a gasket. And so excited to find answers here. Is there a trick to removing this so I can clean it and put a new gasket? Today's project was replacing the water heater. Easy peasy.

Thanks in advance!!

Sorry to jump in here but I just patched a crack in our black tank and then discovered the tray under the hydraulic pump was full of oil. We have a 2003 3670RL that had a lot of problems that were well hidden when we bought it. And the fact that last year we were new to this rv stuff made it easy to sell us on the idea that everything was ok. Anyway, could someone give me directions on how to replace the o-ring (or o-rings) I attached a picture of the leaker.

Hyd. Leak looks easy to fix but probably not.

That was a not uncommon problem in the older, horizontally mounted reservoirs. I recall post about replacing the seal but it was along time ago. You might try Searching on "pump seal" or "hydraulic pump leak" or variations. Look for posts pre-2008. Here is one that alludes to the seal change (about 1/2 way down). I seem to remember there was one with specifics about the seal needed. But a good hydraulics shop should be able figure out what you have and find a replacement.

Here is a better Post with replacement seal ideas.

You could always just make your own O ring seal, most industrial supply stores/auto stores have rolls of various size O ring material. Cut it to the right size on a 45 degree angle at the length required use the Loctite Glue and in about 3 minutes you have an O ring ready to go. We made most of our own in the Plants when doing maintenance rather than trying to stock several thousand sizes, thickness's etc... A few rolls of O ring material where in our tool boxes...

I had a 2002 2850 with the same pump and leak, replaced o ring a couple times but still eventually leaked, next owner replace the pump and motor with new.

What steps did you take to remove the tank. Mine is in a tight compartment with no room to remove the tank as it sits, I assume I would sighon the tank and disconnect the hydraulic lines from the top of the pump and plug those lines to keep any fluid from draining, then I could maneuver for access room. Once completed are there issues with air in the lines?

In the future ... you might consider starting your own thread as this one was started 4 years ago with a brief revival in 2019. Winmagbar may not even own a fiver by now.

I'd try and make your repair without removing lines. The less you take apart (unless you just have to) the less problems arise. However it is easy to purge the air out of the system as all you do is fully cycle the slides in and out 3-4 times.

Thanks Dieselguy,
Would you recommend doing this with the slides in or out?
