Took the bait - got a dually - now what
Greetings again,
Brought home a new dually RAM 3500. I traded in a SRW for a DRW after thinking about stability and payload. Problem though - how do you manage to get over the fender to hook up your rig? Steps don't go that far back and climbing on tire is not as easy as it once was. Anyone have a good fix for this?
Also, since dually is new to me please advise - how in the heck do you put air in the inboard (and outboard) tires? The valve stem looks to be turned inwards towards the frame. Whats that all about?

First of all congratulations on your new truck. You will really notice the difference when you are coming down a tight twisty mountain pass. Way more stability and control than a SRW truck.
I carefully put my foot on top of the tire. I do think they make a lightweight step that fits over the top of the tire that you could stand on. They make an air chuck that has two ends for dually tires. One for checking air pressure and one for adding air. Even with my SRW truck due to the height I had to get climb onto the tire..

Get the Heininger Hitchmate from Amazon for 49.99 . This folds out and over your tire and you can easily step up to do whatever you need in your truck bed. This has a 400# capacity and comes with a bag to fold it up in. Works great.

Nice to hear about the new truck. With our ram, i put my foot on the end of the running board then stretch my leg across to the back tire with the other foot and it gets me up and over the side rail to reach. I know some people will not be able to do that of course. As for air up the inside tire. I have steel rims with caps so i take the cap off the reach through the spokes of the outside tire to the inside tire as the rim holes should be lined up and use a reverse air chuck, Buy one and put it in your glove box with large and small disconnects. I opted for the steel rims so any rim at any position for rotation. I got that advice from a car transporter in a rest area. And ether buy a 4 way lug wrench or a breaker bar with a long extension and a deep socket for removing the lugs on the back rims.

I was doing the step on the tire and pull myself up, but for some unknown reason that tire kept getting taller and taller, so ordered one of those adjustable folding steps that fits over the tire.
It's a bit*h getting old.

Congratulations on your new dually truck!! My fifth wheel hitch (Curt) has an arm that I can reach over fender and grab. It automatically locks onto the kingpin when I back the truck on it and then all I do is reach over to secure it with a pin. When I unhitch I raise the kingpin slightly then reach over and pull the lever to free it.
For the inner tires, I installed a 6 inch steam extenders that clear the wheel l....be sure to get the ones with a 3/8" hex nut at the top vs. at the valve stem for ease of installation.

to put air in them I usually go to a local tire shop to fill them up, if necessary. In my case front tires are filled to 65 psig and rear tires to 80 psig.

ditto to everyone on the tire getting taller. The over the tire steps are handy.
Just a note that they make extension kits for the air stems that bring the inside step out where you can reach it easier. I hope you have built in factory tire pressure monitoring? Even my tradesman has that

I've got a 2 step stool I keep in the back of the truck.
I also need it to fill up my RDS auxiliary tank and to pump from the auxiliary tank into the main tank.

I also carry a step stool to reach in the back. Works well and can use it to extend reach for other things, IE washing to windshield.

Am I crazy or have tailgates on these trucks gotten taller too?
I have seen a couple of high dollar fold down bumper steps to get into the bed. Anyone seen anything a little more reasonable?

Congratulations on the new Dodge. Great truck that's what I drive. anyway, about the trailer hook up with the tall bed. I took care of that with a Warner 2 foot aluminum folding ladder. I leave it in the bed of the truck, easy reach and that put me high enough to get to the hitch and the hitch pin. Work's every time

No dually here, but tall bed sides nonetheless. I keep a couple of plastic milk crates in my bed. They are great for giving you a lift, and nice to hold loose items in the bed. Best of all no one wants to steal them, and maybe better yet is that if you keep your eyes open you can find them laying alongside the road!

Congrats on the new dually. I love mine. I bought 2 of these, 1 for inside the RV and 1 for under the back seat of the truck. Works great for connecting the RV and getting under the hood. Light weight and low price.
