Some people do put grease on their kingpin and that is why I stated that I didn't see any reason why.
I also posted earlier that I have used the disk for 30 years so I do know where it goes.

My point is, the king pin is seperate from the 5th wheel plates that utilize the disk. With the disk you DONT need to grease the 5th wheel plates as that is what the intended use of the plate is for.
The kingpin is another issue...it has DIRECT contact with the jaws of the hitch of your tow vehicle. I CHOOSE to grease the kingpin to help the jaws be lubricated on the hitch, and to stop direct steel to steel contact of the kingpin and jaws. IMHO I don't think it is good to have direct metal to metal contact without some kind of lubrication.

Ditto, have the lube plate, but put some grease on the hitch jaws.

I grease the king pin and the jaws, that is medal to medal contact and use a plastic disk.

How long...
How long do the discs last, anyway?

Unless you damage them hitching up, literally 'forever'

As I stated in an earlier post, I’m on my second one in 12 years of use. I’d probably still have my first one, but it got damaged somehow (can’t remember). More than likely stillusable, but I chose to replace it.

Does a 2020 Montana need a 10" or 12" lube plate?
Picking up my trailer next week and can't wait to get going!
Thanks!

Either will work though the 10" is normal. If you have an air ride or cushioned type hitch, the 12" may be needed. The downside of using a 12" lube plate on a 'standard' hitch is that it may catch while hitching and split the lube plate (found that out the $$ way )

I use the disc but do not use grease on the kingpin. I spray the jaws of my hitch with a dry lube or a spray silicone. I spray all moving parts of the hitch with either one because I do not like the possible running into the kingpin with even my shirt, let alone my head or shoulder and getting grease all over me or my clothes. Just my personal usage and opinion!

We have used them on both out Montana's and never lost one. We do not grease the pin and use very little on the hitch.

If it flops off the pin, a big hammer well applied around the center hole usually fixes it. I also grease the pin and the fitting on the bottom of my B&W hitch head. I also use a dry lube on the hitch arms rubber tho probably not needed.

I have a B&W Companion hitch. I prefer the 12" lube plate since it completely covers the upper disc on the pin box. I occasionally put white lithium grease on the pin and hitch jaws only. Any grease applied picks up sand and dirt and will cause a wear point, so keep an eye out for excessive dirt wherever you put the grease.
