Alaska 2023

Well, May 1 approaches with our imminent departure from the mountain and the start of our next Alaskan adventure to the 49th state. I know others are also headed that way. If you see two Montana Super Solar 3230’s along the way, stop and say hello. You can follow our trip at https://mountainmeanderers.blogspot.com/. We meet Arkware in Wyoming, heading to Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier before heading up the Icefield Parkway to the AlCan. When we leave Alaska in August we are headed straight to the Fall Rally. To offset the increase in fuel prices, we plan on putting our solar to maximum use boondocking.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. I’d love to see Alaska but my wife has arthritis and can’t make the trip. So go enjoy while you can.
Let us know how you are doing on the trip.

Have a safe trip.
Quick question.
In your blog you mentioned
"insurance binders for Canada."
What exactly is that?
We will be going to Banff and Jasper this summer. Have a new cat. Already been to the vet and got her shots and health certificate.

Daryl, it’s free from your insurance company, just stating you are covered in Canada.

We were just put under a winter storm watch for 1-2’ of snow on Tuesday. The hits just keep on coming.

You should volunteer to lead the Alaska travel seminar at the rally!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and I’m sure you will as well. We bent an axel on our trip and had it replaced in Goshen. Let me know if you need a referral at the rally

Cbrez, thanks for the offer. This will be our 19th rally, so we know the area fairly well. Our last Alaska trip we broke springs, so we have had IS on our last two Montana’s. And, we did the Alaska round table last year and have volunteered again this year. Safe travels. See you at Rally.

Oh my, you’re way ahead of me on that one. I wanted to do IS as well, but DW didn’t want to spring for the cost (pun intended). Have a great trip and look forward to hearing about your adventures at the rally.

Terrie and Ron,
Wishing you safe travels, no breakdowns and lots of fun returning for another trip to my home state. Last time we were back home we flew, rented a vehicle, so I'll be planning on attending your seminar to see what you inform us about camping sites and recommendations. If going to Circle Hot Springs have fun and you'll pass our old home on the way to the springs.

We also saw that you lost your much loved pup, sorry to hear about that. If you want to get a puppy fix, our 3 special needs pups love attention at the rally.

Best,

Will definitely give some head pats to the pups. Don’t know if we’ll make Circle Hot Springs. Doing the Icefield Parkway up, hitting NWT at Fort Liard, Top of the World Highway, visiting relatives in Anchorage and Fairbanks, doing Homer, Seward, Whittier, Copper Landing, Palmer, Talkeetna, Denali NP, Kennicutt Mine, Valdez, Skagway, Haines, and Hyder. Hope to get above the Arctic Circle this time and over to Juneau on the fast ferry. Also, ferry from Skagway to Haines. Lots to see before we get to Canada - Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier and a few other places with museums. If it ever stops being winter on the mountain.

I saw that you are taking the ferry. Do you take the fifth wheel too? We spent the summer of 2019 all over Alaska and had a blast. Headed back next year

On two of the 3 ferries, yes. The only two ways to cross the Yukon are the ferry in summer and across the ice in the winter at Dawson City. The marine highway (ferry) between Skagway and Haines will carry our fifth wheel 26 miles vs going on the highway 360 miles and two border crossings. We will take the fast ferry to Juneau for a day trip sans fifth wheel.

Wow enjoy the trip its amazing..
Went last year to many of the same places..
The ALCAN is tough on towables..
Gravel roads were actually better ride then the paved roads..
Paved roads are nothing but failed pot hole patches and frost heaves…
Go slow between destruction bay and Tok.. thats the worst area (last year 2022)
I broke a spring.. but did not miss a beat.. fixed it with help from friends and pressed on.. parts avail very limited…had a search a bit to find parts..
That said i cant wait till i go back again..
If you can take a float plane flight from Homer to Brooks Falls.. during the salmon run the bears were absolutely amazing….

We broke a spring the first time and now have IS. We will probably see bears at Hyder again. The cost of Brooks would mean skipping other adventures.

Thanks. Have you ever been to Hyder? Its a neat little town . Stay in Stewart. There is a bus that serves some really good seafood in Hyder. Also there was a house with a fat black bear living in it. He comes to eat the cat food the owner leaves for the stray cats. Fun picture of that. Happy Trails!
