Neither. It isn't going to matter what route you take, once you get on the south side of the Chicago area, 80-94 it is nothing but a road construction nightmare. I went through there two weeks ago, luckily I was not towing, and it took almost 2 and a half hours to get to the 294/80 split from I 65. The State of Illinois is rebuilding I 80 all the way from the state line to the I294 split. They have diverted all traffic into the eastbound lanes and that is not good!! That trip is usually 30 minutes or less depending on traffic.I 65 is in good shape for the most part. There is some road construction in Kentucky North of Elizabethtown. The entire southbound lane is being reconstructed, so all traffic is diverted to the Northbound lanes.
I would suggest that if you are willing to take I24 to I 57 that you follow that route and attempt to go West on I80 to I 55 and take that into I 294N and follow that to Milwaukee, or take I57 to I74 go west to I39 and take that up to I43 just north of Beloit and go into Milwaukee that way. There is no way that I would willingly go through the south suburban Chicago area with a fifth wheel. I39 is out of the way, but it is a nice drive and there is only one major city along the way and that is Bloomington Normal.

Thankyou Gary, what a life saver. Actually, we are heading to Greendale Wis. next to Milwaukee and I only used Chicago as a place to converge. Using I 24 to I 57 to I 74 to I 39 to I 43 sounds like a nice way around the construction. After that we will be taking I 90 west, looking for the trade winds as Mark said. Thanks again, Earl & Ruth Anne

Your best bet is to take I74 to Bloomington Il. Get on I39 North and follow it to I43 which will bring you to I894 that will take you to the Greendale exit.

When we drive to the Aurora, Illinois area from Montgomery, AL we take I65 to Nashville, I24 to I57 near Champaign/Urbana and then we drive north on State Hwy 47. It's two lane, but flat, straight, and not heavily traveled. Just an idea.

Judy I had seen you were from Aurora. We lived in Hinckley for fourteen years before moving to Rochester, MN. I had completely forgotten about Route 47. We used to use it quite often when we would go down to central Illinois. Did the state ever get the bridge in Morris replaced?
