Wilkes Barre, PA

Does anyone have any recommendations for overnighting around the Wilkes Barre, PA area or a little further South on Route 81. We will be passing through that area, heading South and have figured that we will be ready to stop overnight by the time we pass through there.

We will be heading north on 81 thru PA in 2 weeks. We plan on staying at a Flying J for a dry camping overnight just to get us thru PA.

There's not a lot of places I would recommend at Wilkes Barre but just north on 81 you have a Flying J at exit 219 (Milford) and 58 miles south of Wilkes Barre there is a campground at Hegins, PA (camp-a-while). There is another Flying J at exit 52 off I-81 at Carlisle. I assume you are running I-81 all the way through PA?

Thanks Steve. We will be exiting 81 onto I80 West on the way to the Northeast Rally so Camp-a-While is a little beyond I80. We may end up just overnighting at a Flying J because campgrounds in that whole area seem in short supply.

Pete: Now that i know where you are headed...I would offer my driveway but that would run you about 70 miles (1 way) out of your way. I will see you at the rally. Other places to consider for overnighting are TA and Love Truck stops and there are several on RT 80 west from where 81 intersects with it.See the following:

Pete:

I would suggest varying your route (if you can) and Take I-84 to I-87 in Newburgh, NY, then take I-87 South to I-287 South (NJ) to I-78 West to I-81 South in Harrisburgh

There is a KOA in the Allentown, PA area that Phyllis & I have stayed at a few times

It is about 7 miles off I-78 in New Tripoli, PA

You can connect with the PA Turnpike (I-76) in Carlisle, PA just south of Harrisburg

Pete, our first stop heading to the RGV this winter was Western Village RV Park in Carlisle, PA. Close to 81 and long pull-thrus, so you can stay hitched and leave early in the am. From Westford it's about 435 miles. (just under 9hrs) We averaged 50 mi/hr

I just realized that you ar planning to head west on 80. Carlisle wouldn't work for you.

Hey, Pete. I'm not sure of the route you are going but if you are coming down I-81 south from New York State into Pennsylvania, we are at exit 217 (Harford). We are 1 mile from the interstate and you could use our paved driveway - minimum incline but have water, sewer, and electric.

Wish we could accompany you to the Northeast Rally but our son is getting married the next weekend and DW figures that we need to be home!!

John and Judy Michaels

Thank you for the offer John and Judy however, we will be coming into the Scranton area on I84 and will be heading South on I81 from there. We really appreciate your offer though. I think I have an option for a stop just about where I81 and I80 intersect which would be a good one days haul for us. I am checking it out.
