Rear Kitchen sink /tank vents under the sink area?

On our 2013 3000RK; As the rear kitchen grey tank fills up we do notice an odor in the kitchen. Today we noticed that the vent pipe just stops under the counter-top, just to the right of the sink. The vent pipe has a cap with two small holes, which is probably where the odor is coming from. It is venting the sink trap and the rear grey tank. I wonder why Keystone did not vent this drain and tank through the roof?? We dump the tank every few days and the odor does dissipate fairly quickly. Anyone else have this issue and have any solutions. We do put a holding tank chemical packet in. Any other ideas for a non-toxic anti odor solution. Or should I cut a hole and vent the pipe out the back of the rig? Thanks... Lisa and Hans

Instead of taking it through the roof they used what is sometimes called a quick vent. It has a diaphragm in it so when the sink drains it allows air in the vent to aid in draining the sink. When the sink empties the diaphragm is suppose to close to prevent gas from the holding tank into the living area. It should just screw off the pipe. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot or any plumbing supply shop and get a replacement. Take the old one with you to insure the replacement will fit. Jim

Thanks Jim, will go to Home Depot tomorrow and get a new quick vent cap. Hopefully that will do the trick. Hans

It's what they do in restaurants and stick homes when a remodel needs a vent and there's no place to put one. On the other hand they use better parts than Keystone does on this and other things. X2 on replace it with a good one.

Is this the vent cover that you recommend?

How do you know that the exiting vent cover is bad? I pulled it off and it looked normal.

Thanks,

Hans

It can look good, most of them do. What you can't see is if the diaphragm is sealing completely. Forget your vision and trust your smell. Something is letting gas back into the unit. They cost less than $10. Jim

It looks like Keystone went cheap on the newer models, I have a 07 3000RK and the vent goes to the roof.
They take the vent out the right side of the sink cabnit and the vent it through the same roof vent as they use for the refrigiator.

Got the Sudor Redi-Vent for 18 bucks at Home Depot and so far so good...no odor from under kitchen sink. I think I will call Keystone on Monday and let them know that they should go back to old way of venting out the roof, even if they have to combine it with the fridge vent.

Thanks all on this forum for your advice.

You can call if you like but it won't do much good. Montana has dropped the 3000RK from its lineup.

Just because they are dropping the 3000RK, doesn't mean you can't let Keystone know about an issue. Keystone and other RV manufacturers are changing/dropping/adding models all the time. By getting customer feedback, hopefully they (they manufacturers) will use our input for improvements. At least it doesn't hurt to try.

mtheo's must be vented different than mine as my 2006 3000rk has the quick vent. You have to really crawl up into the cabinet to follow the piping. Even though the piping under the sink goes to the right it does not go up through the refrigerator vent. If it did it would have to be a continuous pipe all the way through the roof. To dump it into the refrig vent chase would still allow sewer gas into the living area. Jim

Our new 2014 3900FB just has an open ended pipe under the kitchen sink for a vent. I plan to swing by Home Depot tomorrow and pick up a Oatey Sure-Vent 1-1/2 - 2 in. ABS Air Admittance Valve. Not sure what Keystone was thinking on that one!

I think Keystone install some type of back flow device in lines to prevent gas escape. I had to have it replaced on my brand new Monty washer drain
