Extra slider valve on the drain pipe

I've read posts here about several of you putting and additional valve on the drain pipe. I've decided this is a good idea. My questions are: What exactly am I shopping for, and how is it installed? I assume my sewer hose attaches just like before, only on the new device? Besides the unpleasant surprise that seems to always be waiting for me when I open the twist cap (Where the heck is that coming from anyway?!? Is my valve leaking?) , what other benefits are there to adding this extra valve?

I have this one... It might work for your application. After installing I installed a screw in the connection before th valve to stop it from turning...

I use something like this: http://tweetys.com/twistonwastevalve...4LXRoCzu_w_wcB It also allows me to shift wast between grey tanks if need be and a few other tricks, but it's on there to prevent the surprise you talk about. Some waste stays in low spots in the lines from the tanks and bumping down the road moves it out of the low spot and on it's way out, resulting in the surprise.

I am with jimcol and DQDick and have the valve they have. I leave it attached the whole time and just open it up after connecting the sewer hose when ever I go to dump our tanks. It sure saves you a mess to clean up if by chance you opened one of the tank valves prior to taking the cap off the drain pipe. It is not a pretty sight nor something you want to happen especially if the black tank was opened first or accidently left open. It also stops any leakage if one of your tanks valves does not close completely and you take off the cap to connect the sewer hose to the drain pipe. I also use a clear extension that I connect to the outlet valve then connect the sewer hose to it thus being able to see when the tanks are done draining and just how clear of the output is from the black tank is after dumping and rinsing it.

I have the "leftovers" too and use the extra knife valve as described by all. I've had the issue with every RV i've owned so I doubt it's a leaking valve. My guess is its just leftovers in the tubes that don't make it down the pipe before I disconnect the hose.

The one caution with this extra valve, if you have a washer make sure you open that valve or you're going to get a mess inside the rig when the washer backs up and spills all over the place. Don't ask how I know!

I also use the waste gate valve that DQDick shows, and attached to that I have attached http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...-adapter/16835. One the end I have a blank cap. So I can see if anything has gotten past the valve before I open the cap and hook the hose up, and then when dumping I can see when the flush is clean.

I would recommend the Flush King (clear elbow and hose attachment). Since installing it I never use my internal black tank flush anymore.

Kinda posting to an older topic, but I was doing a search on installing a gate valve at the end to stop any surprises when you take the cap off, and came across this thread. I have a flush King with the clear elbow attached, but my question is how do you secure it to the pipe, do you just twist it on and leave it, and does it stay during travels, or do you do a little extra securing somehow.
I see where Drifty1 said he installed a screw, does this mean you screwed them together. Thanks.

You drill a small pilot hole and run a screw thru the flush valve into the drain pipe itself. Acts like a clamp.

My bee-hind is being saved right now by one of these valves. After a week or so on our current trip to Alaska, my black valve started to leak. After several days now every dump the pipes are completely full. The drain handle in the convenience center pushes in very hard and feels 'spongy'. I am pretty sure the rubber gaskets are jammed up in there. So I have an appointment Wednesday at a Keystone dealer in Whitehorse. Hopefully they have the gaskets and another valve if needed in stock.
Oh, I have been running this way for about 2 weeks so far - I would be stuck without the outside valve.

My Valterra valve stays on all the time. I always use a clear 45 or 90 elbow on it also.....then hook my sewer hose to that.

I use the Valtera valve and instead of using a screw to secure it from spinning I put a drop of silicone on each connecting tab. I would not go without one as it keeps the attaching of the drain hose clean and dry!!

This is what I do also and have never had a problem with it coming loose.

I installed another knife valve after cutting the old end fitting off close behind so I didn't lose much length. The new valve was glued on and made up for the length lost in the cutting..
I turned the handle so it faces upward as much as possible but checked clearance so it doesn't hit the trailer body. Even so sometimes there is a tiny dribble when I remove the cap.
If the valve ever starts to give trouble I can simply buy seals and re/re it but the extra valve was worth the effort.

It won't go anywhere, it twists on like the cap does. I use one since my black water valve does not close all the way.

I use the same valtera valve and instead of a screw I put a dab of silicone on each tab to keep it from turning off. Works well.

Our black tank handle has been spongy when closing almost since new. Had the dealer "fix" it under warranty and it didn't last long. The simple and cheap solution has been the twist on valve. Works well. When I open it, after attaching the drain hose, I get a stream of black fluid from the black tank so I know it's more than fluid from low spots.
