I have had my CDL for 26 years and use it every day. But don't need it to pull my fifth wheel with my Volvo 780 tractor that's registered as a motorhome. I have been from Washington to Florida and back and never stopped at one scale.

43 years for me! I use to pull doubles for UPS. I’m glad I didn’t give them up. I’m a CDL examiner in Pa now.

I’ve had mine ever since the feds instated the CDL. I didn’t even have to take the driving test only the written, got grandfathered in. I too keep mine just in case they start cracking down of the ever enlarging Rvs.

As an EV owner in the communist county of komiefornia, ev’s don’t pay gas tax that’s correct but registrations for ev’s went up over 100 a year to cover the lack of gas tax revenue. Not to mention the electric company is charging more and taxing that. The only reason I have an EV is the wife commutes and we have a plenty of solar so it costs nothing pretty much.

Unless you got those solar panels for free, you paid for it.
I knew the break on ev's wasn't going to last for long. That was a ploy to kick start interest in those cars.

Hi
Florida tag Florida drivers license only need Florida operators permit or what I think they call A Class “D” license in any state you operate in while puling you 5th wheel including California. Something they call The Interstate Commerce Act.
The one thing you don’t do if your are pulling your Florida 5th wheel with a Florida tagged F450 is pass a weight station in California with you Florida tagged F450 bobtail without going thru the weight station.

California doesn't allow any Pu's in weigh stations. As a matter of fact truckers carry a transponder in there trucks and that tells them weather they need to stop or not. I have seen trucks blow buy weigh stations and not stop. ya they were open for business. Commercial trucks are required to stop at the scale but I believe you need to exceed 5 tons.

Two questions: Were you overloaded? Did CHP weigh your trailer?

Run a search on this forum you will find more than one person ticked when operating a F450 a 5 ton plus truck bob tail and passing the weight station in California.

The only member I recall being ticketed was Artimus Gordon. He lived in the town with the NorCal I-5 weigh station. He also brought it on himself. RIP

Bottom line is the F450 is no longer a light duty pickup truck like the F350 it is a medium duty truck of 5 tons or more.
California regulations require all trucks of 5 ton or more to go thru the weight stations.
The regulation says what is says and has been upheld by the California courts you can play all the word games you want but it doesn’t change the regulation.
This is the end of this conversation.

By definition, a pickup in CA is limited to GVWR of 11499 and less.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/de...bk/ch13/ch13_3
So every F350 SRW with a 11,500# GVWR is not a pickup according to CA.

it costs nothing, I should have been more specific, The vehicle costs nothing to operate in lieu of gasoline. The panels I did pay for in full, and it also covers all usage in the house to include the pool and ac units with left over. I have a friend in the business and I got a really good deal on the panels.
The "Break" you mention I assume thats the tax break? already having solar on the house getting the EV was the next logical step, I used every penny of that credit to move finances around. helped out quite a bit !!

My point was that if you (or anybody) pays money for solar panels, you have already paid money for the electricity to power the car. Buying solar panels is the equivalent of prepaying for electricity for the next X number of years.

If you would have had to buy everything retail how much does a solar system cost?
I’ve been curious but I don’t think a solar system would be a good choice for me. My electric bill for my hame and shop is only about $240 a month.

I hear what you're saying. The financial incentives were really good ROI was cut to a few years by adding the EV. BUT after those few years the investment really pays off !

But you can feel free to stop in at the weight station. I bet you will here some terms of endearment from the scale master and the truckers.
