Spare tire

After reading the thread about the gentlemen losing his spare tire, was wondering if anyone has done anything to insure it stays up there. Never have been to concerned until I changed the spare to a Sailun, which is a much heavier tire then the old OE spare .

Our spare tire rack is not the beefiest thing I have ever seen, but mostly concerned with that really thin cable, and who knows how well that crank system is built. I think at the least adding a little heavier steel cable. I would sure hate that tire to come undone going down the highway. Anyone have any thoughts about this.

Many members have put a tie down strap around the tire and the frame to keep it secure.

Have you checked to see the weight ratings of that steel cable? You might not need a new one.

I rebuilt mine using a Ford Super Duty spare tire winch. I also put a strap on it.

I would think the weight rating is okay, at least I would hope so, but guessing not much more then a 1/8" cable.

Well, I can see what my next project will be. Although I will need a Ram winch for the handle to work on both

Thanks for the tip, and the link, does not look like too difficult of a job. I have everything I will need ,and might even add a bit of welding to it .
