Shower plug stuck

Can anyone tell me how to remove the plug from the shower drain?

We just kept pulling on the plug while twisting it back and forth until it pulled out. We also did that to the vanity sinks too.

Um.... this may seem like a silly question, but why are you putting a plug in a shower drain? I can certainly understand a bath tub drain and a sink drain. But I don't understand why you'd plug a shower drain, unless the shower basin is a bathtub and not a shower pan?
